Brett Favre Staying Retired

http://blogs.startribune.com/vikingsblog/?p=3077Judd just received a phone call from Brad Childress who said he talked to Brett Favre and that he was informed that Favre is staying retired. Childress cited the daily grind both mentally and physically as part of the reason why Favre remained retired.
“I just think it was a rare opportunity to explore a Hall of Fame quarterback who had background in the NFC and in this division,” Childress said. “He knows our system inside out … This doesn’t change anything about how I feel about our football team.”

Good move by Favre, great news for the Vikings. I never bought that he would make them better. His legacy is safer now.

The only thing that worried me about the Vikings adding Favre was momentum. I think the addition of Favre would make that team feel better than they actually were...if that makes any sense.

I'm kind of torn. Look at how they ended last season:
Jackson's final 4:
57-89, 789 yards, 9 TDs, 2 INTs, 1 lost fumble. MIN went 3-1 and played 3 playoff teams.
Favre's final 4:
78-132, 804 yards, 2 TDs, 8 INTs. NYJ went 1-3 and played 3 teams that drafted in the top 11.
Granted Favre was legitimately hurt, but he didn't exactly light it up in Green Bay in 2 of his last 3 years there either. He's in decline and I think that would have steepened with the WRs in MIN (better than the Jets WRs though). I like how Sidney Rice and Bernard Berrian openly praised Jackson and kept his confidence high and showed support. I like that they can focus on building on what they've already done and not have to integrate Favre's ego and riskier style into the mix. Having said that, once they make the playoffs (and they will barring a rash of injuries) I'd much rather have Favre at the helm than TJax or Sage.

God, I'm so sick of Favre. He's not good anymore and he just needs to go the **** away. Seriously he's such a damn clown.

good, hopefully it's for good this time
i didn't want him on the vikes, he probably would be better than jackson or sage (maybe not though, since like Icness said he's in decline)
but i was pleased with the reports that there was already some unrest in the lockerroom and he hadn't even decided yet

Thank God. Rosenfels isn't a bad QB if Jackson can't step up. My hypothesis is that the large number of turnovers was accredited to Gary Kubiak unsuccessfully sharing play call duties with Kyle Shannahan. As the season went on, Shannahan got more responsibilities and finally took over in week 17 with turnovers dropping drastically.
He's a good "manager." The Vikings can definitely win with him at the helm, but I question their WRs.

Anyone else think that Favre timed this pretty odd? I mean, Vick is all over the headlines and Favre just couldn't stand not being the lead? Am I too cynical here?

I think it has more to do with training camp eve. Most older players say they retire from training camp, not from Sundays.

I do not believe anything out of Favre's mouth regarding retirement until the season opening game.

I think you are spot on. Favre is the T.O of quarterbacks, he will do whatever he has to do to get the coverage. He definitely buys into the saying "any press is good press." I wouldn't be suprised at all if in a couple weeks he "misses football" and is "thinking" about coming back again....hopefully not though, I have had my fill of him for quite some time. He was a great player and just needs to move on with his life outside of football.

Calling Favre an attention whore might be fair, but the timing of this announcement was based on the start of training camp. Vikings players started reporting yesterday. I'll also say there's the Vikings-Favre thing is pretty much done. If he comes back, it will be with a different team.

It doesn't matter if Favre's interested if the Vikings aren't. Childress has said the Vikings are done, I would guess that he's telling the truth. At some point you accept that the guy can't make up his mind and you move on. I think the Vikings are moving on.

It doesn't matter if Favre's interested if the Vikings aren't. Childress has said the Vikings are done, I would guess that he's telling the truth. At some point you accept that the guy can't make up his mind and you move on. I think the Vikings are moving on.
My thoughts exactly, and they are right for doing so.

i think part of it was favre playing next to a running game that was non existent the last 4 games and put more pressure on himself. i feel he wouldnt have to do so much if he's playing in the backfield with the best back in the league
