Plaxico pleads guilty, agrees to 2 years in prison

Post#1 » by CJ_18 » Thu Aug 20, 2009 3:26 pm

NEW YORK (AP) - Former New York Giant Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty Thursday to a weapons charge and agreed to a two-year prison term for accidentally shooting himself at a Manhattan nightclub.

The ex-wide receiver pleaded guilty to one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a lesser charge than he initially faced. Under a plea agreement, he agreed to a two-year prison sentence and two years of supervised release.

I still don't get how this works... Michael Vick kills dogs, gets 2 years. Donte Stallworth drives drunk and kills a human, gets 30 days. Plaxico Burress shoots himself, gets 2 years.

Don't carry a firearm in a place with one of the strictest gun laws in all of America. Simple as that. If Cheddar was so afraid of his safety, get a body guard.

This really disgusts me. Normally I'm on the law's side against stupid athletes but two years for shooting HIMSELF is **** absurd. I think the DA should be ashamed of himself.

Yeah, it's the DA's fault.

Well if he wanted a smaller sentence he should have shot someone else.

They didn't plead on the charge of shooting himself, that one was dropped in the deal. They plead on carrying a gun illegally, which is a pretty big issue in New York.

It was registered in another state for christ's sake. It's not as if he found it or bought it illegally.

Plax was simply made an example of because he's high profile. Well congrats to the mayor and the DA. Mission accomplished you pricks.

He was a fool for turning down the deal offered months ago. Still, this law is a joke. The man had the gun registered in another state. His teammate was robbed in front of his own damn house just a week prior so yea, Plax decided to carry a weapon. It wasn't like he got it in Bedstuy & the numbers were scratched off. Bloomberg publicizing the case didn't help Plax either.

He brought a concealed weapon to a night club and shot himself.

How is any of this not a direct reflection of how dumb Plax is?

I'm glad they made an example out of him, he deserved it.

Who the hell brings a gun to a club anyway? If he really did "need" it, maybe he should have stayed home?

OK, I didn't see this coming. I'm really glad the Bears didn't sign him now.

honestly shooting yourself is punishment enough. this whole incident has been blown out of proportion. its pretty bad that hes going to spend 2 years in jail for shooting himself when stallworth spent only 24 days in jail for killing an actual person. :nonono:

I'm kind of torn on how I feel about this sentence, but I agree with the comparison you made. While he did break the law by taking his gun, it's not like he was packing a stolen or blackmarket weapon. It was legit and licensed, even if it was in another state. Also, shooting yourself should be taken into consideration as well. It should be seen as a decent punishment in its own right. Not only did he get injured, but from now on he's going to be known as that guy who shot himself. To be honest, both sentences are a little crazy here - Plax should have got less than 2 years, while Stallworth should have got a lot longer than he did.

While it was licensed, it wasn't licensed for concealed carrying. And it certainly wasn't licensed for concealed carrying in New York City.

Didn't he ask for a bigger contract this offseason? I remember he asked for a trade.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't he offered a 3-month sentence a few months back but turned that down?

Yeah, it certainly looks that way. It would be tough for anyone to come back after 2 years in prison, and this guy isn't exactly young.

How so? He broke a strict law in NYC and now he is being punished....gun control is a big deal in NYC. I also don't believe that they are making an example of him at all. If you listened to Mike and Mike this morning they had a legal analyst on that used to write for SI and he stated that Joe off the street would have gotten the same sentence. Why should anyone feel sorry for him? I get that Dante killed someone and got a lesser sentence so everyone is pissed. Plax chose to carry an illegal firearm and intentionally broke a very strict law (ignorance to the law is not an excuse). Dante killed someone, but there was no intention or choice to kill him/her. Yes he chose to drink and drive, but not kill someone.
