Suicide watch for Lakeshow!

Post#1 » by Icness » Fri Jan 8, 2010 9:45 pm

Seattle fired Jim Mora Jr. today and they are expected to name Pete Carroll head coach, perhaps as early as tomorrow. He already interviewed and cleared his weekend recruiting trip work. Leslie Frazier was also approached but turned down the interview. Ron Rivera will also interview, probably to fulfill the Rooney Rule.

I'm not real surprised Mora got fired--with mgt. cleared out he might as well be gone too. The lack of improvement of the younger players under Mora was kind of disturbing.

I knew Carroll would go back, too much ego to leave that stain of relative failure on his resume. Same with Nick Saban in another year or two.

Seeing that Seattle has yet to hire a GM, will Carrol have the final say on personnel and hire someone that can work with him in the front office?

Sure sounds that way. The two guys I knew there (a scout and a player personnel guy) both got fired with Ruskell so I'm just going off secondhand stuff.

Joe McKnight declared for the draft too. Bad day for USC, though I'll be REAL interested to see who gets that sweet job.

Wiretap has Fisher and Del Rio as potential candidates for USC.

Can't see them leaving the NFL.

So why leave USC? He's got job security and is loved. Maybe the NCAA is going to lay the hammer on USC football.

Probably nothing more than the ego thing. ESPN was talking about how he always wanted to try and do well in the NFL and knew he had to do it soon because it would be harder when he was 63+.

Reportedly the deal is worth 35 million over 6 years.

I can see Del Rio leaving, he wouldn't have as much job security if he were coaching in a large market team.

I'm betting it's an inside hire though.

I think they chose as a school to hit their own basketball team extra hard in order to help save football, but the microscope is definitely on and maybe Pete wasn't comfortable with that. All their athletic programs are under huge scrutiny right now--their mens vball and womens soccer teams are close to earning major sanctions too.

I also think Carroll knew he was losing Jeremy Bates back to the NFL and he's tired of changing coordinators all the time. Plus USC isn't getting the major talent influx like they were in the mid 00s anymore, UCLA and Stanford and Oregon have caught up somewhat. Might as well leave on top, I agree with that argument.

ok.

WE ARE IN FULL AND TOTAL MELTDOWN!

many blame the AD.

some think it was his time.

heck, some even think good riddance!

to tell you the truth, i dont even know where to start. weve got candlelight vigils goin on around here, and the band members playing to boot.

the bottom line is he is gone, and the programs next move IS A GIGANTIC ONE to fill shoes of a multi-time conference champion. BACK TO BACK National Champion. DOMINANT program coach who finally unlocked the known entity in California Recruiting. That to me is the biggest thing, PETE virtually had a LOCK on the local talent and owned everything left of the missisippi. Including hawaii.

Do other coaches know more about Xs and Os, sure. But the recruiting battle was won every year by Pete. Thats what this program needs in its upcoming Coach, a big time recruiter to solidify the stronghold we have thus far on Western recruits . . . and beyond . . .

Can't actually disagree with Lakeshow to be honest, they might find a better X and O coach, but good luck finding a recruiter like that, he's truly a master.

Yep. The way he got all those 5-star recruits to buy into competing against one another for playing time was brilliant, and also impossible to reproduce. The one bright spot about that is that perhaps now they'll start getting some players that have had to work hard at it and didn't just athletically peak earlier than their peers. Player development at USC has been a joke because Carroll only ever recruited guys who were studs by the time they were 15. If USC can keep half those kids and blend in the kind of players that are now going to Boise State and Utah and Iowa and Georgia Tech--second-tier HS players that are fundamentally great but don't have the full athletic ability yet. Put those two together and USC can rule the PAC-10...Virginia Tech has done that very successfully for years, as did Florida State in their heyday.

Stunner. My gut reaction is that it's a great move for both sides. Surprising but great.

Now about the NCAA investigation...

That's kind of a douche move by Lane Kiffin, isn't it? But I'm not exactly surprised by that.

awesome!

the key to me however is NORM CHOW as offensive coordinator. the defense is already set with monte. but to have the GURU back means big points for the offensive machine.

I think the Seahawks made a big mistake here.
