So Much For Jamaal Charles' Breakout Season

The signing of Thomas Jones by the Chiefs yesterday tells me one thing: the Kansas City brass still doesn't completely trust Charles as their no.1 runner. Despite rushing for over 1100 yards - in only 10 starts - apparently the Chiefs feel they still need a high profile insurance policy in Jones.

Jamaal Charles was a guy I pegged to have a breakout season this year as the clear no.1 in KC. While he is still the likely starter, 20 plus touches and heavy work in goal line situations are likely not forthcoming in 2010 for Charles. It'll be interesting to see how this battle for carries plays itself out in KC.

They're thinking that Charles isn't durable enough to handle another year of logging 20+ carries per game. They saw what happened to Larry Johnson there and they don't want to do that to Charles, who has a somewhat lengthy injury history already. I like the Jones signing--keeps Charles fresh and gives them a legit beween-the-tackles back that can pass protect and has a good history of sharing the load.

Most teams go with the dual back approach these days. I don't think it's that they don't trust Charles, it's just that he's not a very big back, and this will keep him fresh.

Picking up a reliable backup to Charles was definitely a smart move given his build and injury history. I Just thought they might have gone with someone a little more under the radar at a cheaper price tag.

2 back system helps backs produce and produce for a longer period of time. with that said, they kinda seem like the same kinda back. speed guys. but the bulkier power runner is maybe what they shouldve picked up to gain the tough yards.
