Seems Weaver knew the landscape, and after drafting Duren, he simply left Ayton out in the wind.

bstein14 wrote:I think you could argue that the Pacers move was calculated and strategic. Turner is now the #1 center on the trade market. The Suns are likely going to try to shed salary and only Indy, SA, and Detroit have cap space remaining. This just makes the overall value of cap space go up around the league if more teams are trying to get out of contracts. They also did a solid for power agent Bill Duffy which could benefit them down the road. And they're showing their fans they're committed to spending big $$$ on good players to bring them to Indiana.

And with our $11-$14mil in cap space Trader Troy might not be done yet

So like I said in the other ayton thread they didn't want to give him that 5th year.

So... The Pistons wouldn't have ended up with Ayton anyway (since it was also stated that the Suns weren't interested in a S&T) so can we put to bed the notion that Weaver "missed out" on Ayton?
All the more better anyway, I really like this core and having an endless amount of cap flexibility to work with going forward.

Not the largest max contract ever. The largest RFA offer-sheet ever.

Did Indiana have to cut players to open up the cap space for the offersheet?
Weaver = Hinkie

Yes, they waived the players they received in the Brogdon trade.

Yea they waived three players. We should pick up Duane Washington. This board would implode with Hayes vs Washington posts lol.

Indiana had to know that Phx was going to match, right? They've been in talks with them for how long, now?
Were they planning on waiving those players anyway?

They must have at least thought that there was a chance Phoenix wouldn’t match, otherwise they wouldn’t bother.
But yeah, it’s fair to say they didn’t view those players as pieces for their team. They may not have waived all of them regardless, but it was worth a shot at Ayton apparently.

When was this? My understanding was always that Phx demanded a S&T for Ayton and threatened to match straight offers. (A threat I erroneously felt was a bluff)

That notion was ridiculously anyway. If Weaver had really wanted Ayton he could have gotten him, period. Outside of Phoenix actively wanting to keep him, of course. The fact that Ayton isn't with the Pistons clearly demonstrates that Weaver didn't want him. End of story.

He's saying Weaver shouldn't be accused (now or future) of missing out on Ayton because he would not have been able to acquire him even if he chose to pursue him.
As opposed to accusing Weaver of missing out for choosing not to pursue a player he could have had.

What I meant to say that Phoenix wasn't interested in negotiating a S&T after the Pacers presented the offer sheet, I believe there was a window to work out a trade in that timeframe after the offer sheet was signed.
Considering how quickly Phoenix matched it seems like they weren't interested in letting him go regardless, so unless Weaver was willing to vastly overpay in a sign and trade (overpay of trade assets on top of the contract overpay), it seemed unrealistic anyway.

Re: Ayton has an offer sheet he could sign as soon as today.
The end of the Ayton saga was always predictable. Unless a team approached with a good sign-and-trade offer---there's no guarantee that the Pistons would have been willing to part with the assets the Suns would have been asking---Phoenix had no incentive to let him go rather than hold onto him and hope to either mend the relationship or trade him later for a better offer. Doubly so for an offer sheet, which would have had him leave for nothing at all in return.
Even had the Pistons FO ended up of a mind to go after Ayton, I think it's unlikely that they would have succeeded.
It's around $8 million plus whatever Kemba gives back in his buyout.

And I’m saying that it’s a ridiculous notion that Weaver made a mistake by not pursuing Ayton. Unless you know what Weaver’s plan is how do you justify anything he does as being a mistake? The definition of mistake is not “didn’t do what I wish he would have done.” Now, obviously that’s how it’s frequently used in forum, usually by posters who call everything Weaver does a “mistake” when those mistakes often turn out to be successes.
