On another note, Cade needs to be more than just A guy. It seems like he didn't take preseason seriously at all where, on the other hand, you see Ja Morant who is much more established playing as hard as can be. Not sure I'm a fan of that attitude and find it a little surprising that Cade would sleepwalk through any game so I hope that it's just a blip on the radar and that he starts playing like he's capable of playing when the real games start.
So as promised, a follow up piece on exactly what you touched on;

"He wanted to step lightly in preseason and let his identity as leader of the band develop organically. He envisions he’ll be more assertive as the regular season arrives.

“I would almost call it passive,” he said. “I feel I wasn’t aggressive enough in the preseason, but it’s a good time to feel out the game. I definitely learned a lot in preseason and I’m ready to take the next step going into the season.”

The article is worth a read, and Cade gets it, so no worries here.

This is why I put zero stock in preseason games in any sport other than any given player executing the fundamentals, and even then expectations have to be tempered since there may not be 100% effort put into anything. Sure, if Cade only hits jumpers at a 30% rate throughout all of preseason it’s something to be concerned about, but being deferential, maybe making a few too many lazy passes, Bey trying to drive more when he should be shooting, etc. can all be due to preseason experimentation and effort (or lack thereof). I mean, it’s an 82 game season so naturally preseason is likely to be more of a “practice against other teams” than a “putting on the finishing touches” thing. 17 games in an NFL season is a different story; take too much time figuring things out, lose one too many games unexpectedly early on and the season could for all intents and purposes be shot by Game 5. It’s not the same for the NBA; that’s why there are “load management” and “scheduled loss” games. You can afford to throw a few away, basically. And if you can do that in the regular season it REALLY devalues preseason games.

Thanks for posting. Hopefully this is the case and he ramps it up starting tonight.
