Can You See Them EVER Removing the 3-pt line?

Post#1 » by MortSahlfan » Fri Oct 28, 2022 10:15 pm

What if in 5-10 years, the ratings went to the toilet? "America's Game" is now #3 or #4 and a large part of the NBA's success was Yao Ming, who brought in over a billion fans instantly. The Chinese STILL love the Houston Rockets!

Of course, they'll test it in the G-League, but I'd love to see it. And if it doesn't work, go back in 5 years, I don't know.... I just can't understand teams down by 1 with seconds left, and brick a 3... Guys passing up easy lay-ups for a bricked three, if they get a shot at all. Guys avoiding contact at all costs. I miss big men going at it.. Speaking of Yao, I remember when he blocked Shaq's first 3 shots.

A Pistons pre-season game is more fun to me than a regular season game. I used to watch them from start to finish, but now I just FF to the last few minutes. I enjoy "Inside the NBA" half-time show more than the game usually, especially with one of those (now) typical 40-pt blow-outs.. I'm still thinking about Phoenix losing Game 7 in Phoenix to a Dallas team with Luka and role players. 21-2? Down by 50? And CP3's clock is ticking...

I still think guys would shoot from distance. Now THOSE are the stats I'd love to see. The change, but also the shooting % of each guy, compared to when they counted 3 points instead of 2.

P.S. - Next on my agenda is to remove playing street ball by 1's and 2's.. You're essentially giving a 3-pt shot 4 points.

I'm pretty sure the NBA has been doing just fine since long before Yao Ming came along. Like since the early 80's when Bird, Magic and Isiah came around, followed shortly thereafter by Jordan.

But as far as getting rid of the 3 point line...never gonna happen. That's one of the changes that added to the game's popularity.

Are there any particular instances of this you have in mind? Are there videos of this you can show us? If teams are launching 3s down 1 on a final shot, that's just poor strategy and they deserve to lose. Of course, if they are expecting time to remain on the clock, there's a big difference between being up 1 or being up 2.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

I concede we are stuck with the 3 point line. I just think it should be moved waaaaaaay out so that it becomes a more difficult, rarer shot that merits 3pts over 2.

We are seeing so much of it that its become just a normal jump shot. In order to be a 3 pointer it should be more difficult.

Isnt there some precedence for adjusting the rules for competition when Wilt became so dominant they had to tweak some rules i thought?
Here it is-

These rules changed included widening the lane, instituting offensive goaltending and revising rules governing inbounding the ball and shooting free throws (Chamberlain would leap with the ball from behind the foul line to deposit the ball in the basket).

We are at a point where the competition would benefit from some tweaks to make the 3 much more difficult imo.

Maybe move it back a foot.

Some 80's player said maybe make the court bigger because it's crowded out there.

No.

People may decry the 3 point line but the truth is that it creates space for the flashy playmakers and dunkers.

The game wasn’t as fun to watch when the best way to win was just to jam the paint defensively before the prominence of the line. Now, there are multiple ways to score efficiently- you can go the Giannis route or the Steph route.

Might they modify it in some way? Maybe? I see people’s point about the three becoming too important to offenses, but the other extreme is far worse IMO.

Not saying it’ll happen, but I think it’s more likely we get a 4 point line vs getting rid of the 3 point line.

Return to Detroit Pistons
