1. Udoka
2. Stackhouse
3. Chauncey
4. Joerger

However, my bet is we do bring someone in less experienced so Casey can transition gracefully while maintaining his current staff. As a result my bet is either Stack or one of the current assistants.

Billups had a pretty disappointing season with Portland this year.

Penny Hardaway would certainly be an interesting hire for us... obviously he has connections to Sheed, Larry Brown, and Duren.

I don’t want Chauncey at all. He’s under 50, but he tends to be the ‘old school Larry Brown throw the players under the bus’ type coach. Young players do not respond to that kind of coach. It hasn’t worked in Portland because of that.

I appreciate what Casey has done for us. The team has played hard, and Casey has definitely been hamstrung by a lack of skill. He's shown he can get more than what ought to be expected when a team is trying to win as he did in Toronto. He might be the one with a head coaching championship if Toronto had kept him when they brought on Kawhi.

About the candidates:
Nick Nurse: I do think he was a bit over-heralded after Toronto's Kawhi championship. Still, when looking at potential retreads, he's definitely got the best reputation of the bunch.

Kenny Atkinson: He took a ragtag team and got them playing together at a near playoff level. I'm not sure he had a lot of ingenuity. There were complaints that he was inflexible. Still, he showed the ability to get greater than expected results.

Ime Udoka: The Celtics achieved at a high level under Brad Stevens. They then achieved at a high level under Ime Udoka. They are now achieving at a high level under Mazzulla. Maybe the roster is just that good. It's impressive that Boston found its stride last year under Udoka, but if they are successful under every coach, maybe it's not the coach. Is the drama worth it?

Dave Joerger: I was a big proponent of his back in Memphis. That Grizzlies team overachieved. Then his Kings team overachieved. But he wears a red flag as a cape. Franchises can't seem to wait to get rid of him despite his success. I do hope his health has recovered, but I don't want him as a coach.

Chauncey Billups: He's a Piston for life, but no. He was absolutely not ready for the Portland job and there's no telling if he ever will have the makings of a good coach.

Jerry Stackhouse: Intriguing choice. He's had some success at multiple levels. Due to his playstyle, he's not someone I would have envisioned as a good coach, but it wouldn't be wrong to see him get an opportunity.

Becky Hammon: Maybe she's left the NBA for good? I don't know, but Pop is confident she can coach and that she's not just a novelty for being a woman in a predominantly male profession. I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Assistants around the league: There are probably some good ones out there - some have been mentioned in this thread. I don't know enough about what they do to know who would be best to role the dice on. The Grizzlies are a team I'd like to poach people from, be they coaches or front office. Not sure if it is all Taylor Jenkins or if he has a trusted assistant who has a positive effect on the team as well...

Jeff Van Gundy: He won't, but it would be entertaining. And it just might work.

Hubie Brown: I just checked and he still has a pulse.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Hellll no I don’t. Casey did what he was told to do though for the last 3 seasons which is TANK HARD. Thank you Casey, mission accomplished.

I'd be happy with any of this 3. Coach is not our issue tho.

Hammond is a decent idea. I think we have a group of players who’d be open to that

Only 3 or 4 players matter the rest will be out of the league soon, they do not belong.

I would love to hire Becky Hammond. It would be a perfect situation for her coming into a young team, very little expectations, soft media, and it would be positive attention for this franchise.

He's going to want to be able to coach this group into the playoffs. No one wants to work on a project and put in all the hard work and then leave right before the potential payoff.... unless they think that the job they did wasn't good enough and they are essentially jumping off a ship taking on water before it sinks.

File that analysis under “swing and a miss by a mile.”
