As others have mentioned the money with the added security was a great selling point. On top of the ability to go out and have autonomy with his staff etc

Was a very good close by ownership

"During the initial conversations in which Williams told teams, including Detroit, that he was leaning toward taking next season off — Phoenix owes him roughly $21 million over the next three years — he did mention that the Pistons, along with another team, would be a job he’d consider taking if he were to come back to the sideline next season, per league sources. The heavy pursuit from Weaver, Arn Tellem and Gores, along with a lucrative commitment and fondness for Detroit’s young core, ultimately, was too good for Williams to pass up."

The heavy pursuit from Weaver, Arn Tellem and Gores...

Sounds like they worked together and showed a united front to Monty.

How's that sit with all those who were claiming the FO had beef?

No one was claiming they had beef. Only that they if it wasn't Monty, they had varying opinions on who we should hire(Which was wisely reported). If Weaver, Tellum, and Gores all thought that Lee or Ollie was the guy we'd almost certainly have hired one of them. The fact that they were split on who to hire and perhaps none of those guys blew away the entire team is why Gores decided to circle back to Monty and give him the biggest coaching contract of all time to get him to come to Detroit.

The interesting thing would have been to see if Gores went with Tellum's guy (Lee) or Weaver's guy(Ollie) but we'll never know because he went with Monty, who was the clear choice if he was willing to coach this season.

I'm sure either choice would have supported any narrative some people push
