I'm not sure why some people can't expand their mind beyond this one hypothetical move.
If you do this trade with Utah, there is nothing saying it has to be a stand alone move.
Those extra draft picks are tangible assets, that allow not only flexibility but also ammo to continue to move around the draft board. You can always use them in trade for players as well. Or look to move them for a future 1st (which removes the handcuffs Detroit currently has of not being able to trade a 1st rounder.) Even if you make those picks on draft night, not only would it give you more darts to throw to try and find a lottery ticket, but looking beyond that young talent on rookie contracts always holds some degree of value. Those dudes can be used as sweetener in trade somewhere down the line.
So the that hypothetical trade certainly is attractive. So the question really comes down to what your opinion is on the drop between #5 to #9. I personally don't see much of a dropoff. To me, after 3 this draft is very much a beauty is in the eye of the beholder type of lottery. So if Troy isn't in love with anybody he can get at 5, it would make a lot of sense to trade back, pick up a few assets, and still get a guy at 9 who is in a similar tier of prospect (and perhaps even the guy he would have taken at 5 anyways.)
If it was me, I'd do this trade without hesitation.

Yea I agree with the value, but IMO there’s a huge drop off, especially for fit.
If Whitmore, Walker, Hendricks, Black are all gone by 9, no way would I do that trade.

Sam Vecnio has a great draft guide. His tiers are
VM
Scoot
Whitmore, Miller, Amen (the top 5)
Walker, Hendricks, Black, Ausur (the top 9)
Assuming Sam knows what he is talking about, there is certainly a drop off going from 5-9, and a good chance of missing Hendricks. Hendricks is a good target for Indiana at 7.
