Should we try to lock up Beef Stew this summer so he's not a RFA next?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Sat Jul 1, 2023 1:05 am

Just curious what everyone thinks on offering Stewart an extension this summer versus letting the season play out and letting him become a RFA next. Does it make any sense to try to lock him up now? Perhaps something similar to what Herb just got 4 years $54 to $60 million? ... or are we still not sure he's a starter or 6th man type and we should wait and let him earn it even if it means he could work himself into a much bigger deal in 12 months?

He'll have acap hold of approx 16 mil so unless you can get him to agree to less than that there's no point signing him early.

At this rate, you play next season, and see what you've got before you make any moves.

The only chance this team has got, is if Cade is who we all think he is, because if he's not?

This upcoming season is going to be a disaster, and Stewart ain't getting resigned.

James Edwards has been saying that the Pistons will try to get an extension done with him but if it were up to me I would wait. He's a clunky fit offensively if/until his shooting becomes a legitimate positive attribute. And he can slide to the center spot defensively but rim protection is going to suffer. Which is fine, since center minutes shouldn't be under consideration unless Duren gets hurt, but I prefer the wait-and-see approach to make sure the Pistons would be paying for what they hope to get.

No, he is not very good and he is not a 4. He is an energy backup center. You don't give those that kind of money. Let him hit free agency and match whatever he get which won't be much.

Would Weaver trade him for two 2nd rounders??

If you answered yes, then that means Weaver will offer him an extension starting at less than $20 million.

If you answered no, then Weaver values Beef Stew at > $20 million.

Today’s Harris trade proves that Weaver sees taking on $20 million equals two 2nd rounders. We all now have a new formula on Weaver’s value hierarchy.

Fans of other teams on RealGM aren’t a true barometer of anything, but I’ll still say Stew generates a lot of interest on the T&T board even tho he only has one more cheap year.

I honestly have no idea what his price point will be. He’s a young, unfinished product with some very distinct strengths and weaknesses. It’s very true his future value depends a lot on his three stroke developing.

That said, if he’d take a 4/50 I’d sign him immediately. He’s a much better player than Bagley.

Stewart is like a 10mil/yr player right now tops I'd have no interest extending him

I'd be comfortable with up to 3 years 51 million. People might think that sounds like a lot, but he's going to continue to get better and the cap will continue to go up.

So we took on Joe Harris for 2 second round picks and ate $20m in cap. That’s the value of Stewart.

Don’t be foolish - player like Stewart are everywhere. He doesn’t move the needle. Miami finds those types of players undrafted.

You spend on players that move the needle. End of story.

That would be a terrible contract. 17mil for for unathletic Kenneth Faried/quincy acy lol

If we extend him now we pay him as an energy big off the bench.

Or he gambles on himself and shows that he can fit in and be the 4 we desperately need. If he fills that role money will follow whether that's us or someone else.

Well yes, you would think it is a terrible contract if you make terrible comparisons like that.

Also for reference, a 17M contract in the 2024/25 season is just less than 12% of the cap. Most teams would happily pay that for a guy giving them ~25 quality minutes a night, which is what Stew will be able to provide as he continues to develop into his next contract. I would bet that it ends up between 15-17M.

Fact is he isn't giving us 25 quality minutes. He's at best a average defender and below average playing out of position at 4 on the perimeter. Stewart is also a negative on offense as he can't finish around the rim and has a very low skill level on offense.

If he can actually learn to shoot from 3 maybe he can be a decent change of pace stretch 5 off the bench but that's it. For some reason people overrate guys just because they're young and we drafted him. If Stewart was on some other team no one here would even care about or want him on our team.

Stew is a keeper. A player and a "culture" guy who plays his heart out. They ask him to shoot 3's (bad idea, I think), he does it. Bruce Brown was taken for granted, too.

I love Stew as a person but I still feel he is undersized / lacks the verticality to do what we need as a 5. On offense he hasn't shown enough to be what we need at the 4 position.

Duren fills the 5 position on both ends better for us and starting Stew at the 4 puts us at a competitive disadvantage vs most lineups.

TLDR: For our needs Stew should not be viewed as anything but a backup role player.

We should trade him if we feel other teams value him higher than that or we can't sign him to a contract commensurate with a backup 5.
