Yeah, it's an off season fluff piece, but at least he knows what the weakest area of his game is/was and is working on it. This is not like dre practicing 3 pointers all off season.
But yeah, he has all the physical tools you could hope for in terms of becoming a pesky and disruptive defender. With his speed, there is absolutely no reason for him to ever be out of the play.

Pharaoh wrote:Yeah it's a puff piece but I remember Hayes saying he focused on the defensive end after his rookie season and that's shown to be true as it's the strongest part of his game.
I forgot Ivey is 6'4" with a 6'9" wingspan - with Cade back we should put Ivey on the opponent's best guard - assuming he can really dial in on that end obviously

We also got a fluff piece about Hayes working on his shot before the season.
I have more confidence in Ivey than I did in Killian though.

just like hayes with his offensive ability, ivey is starting from pretty much the bottom of the league with his defensive development. rookies almost always struggle defensively but he is starting from the bottom of that group.
hopefully he gets to be an average defender eventually, but i'm just hoping to see some sort of improvement this year.

Strange this fellow Ivey, supposed to be a son of a coach, would think he would have been more fundamentally sound, I have to think his Mother didn't really do much coaching of him, or isn't a very good coach.

The problem is that a lot of his progress was due to him being in the lead guard role with control of the offense. That won't be his role this season and going forward so I think there are still real questions about his fit next to Cade in more of an off ball role.
The upside is very high obviously but I just wonder how he'll do in a support role playing off of a #1.
I agree that he benefited from the increased role and usage, and he stood up to it. Teams need playmakers, and Ivey has shown he can do that pretty well. Hopefully, Ausar gives the Pistons some of that too. Let's recall Cade being guarded by groups of guys and often no one else making plays. They'll all benefit if they can work together, and the team has to have high hopes for such a superb athlete. Yes, he has a lot to learn on defense. Who knows how any of this will play out, but this team pretty much has to take a good look at a #5 pick.

Mike Curtis: The NBA just released 2 videos to explain the new flopping violations, being tested this year on a trial basis. They used Jaden Ivey to show a flopping violation from an offensive player. This play would result in a non-unsportsmanlike tech & the opposing team gets 1 FT attempt. pic.twitter.com/YhJxccoIz7

As much as I hate that they used Ivey for this clip, when there a myriad of repeat offenders to choose from, I love this new rule.MortSahlfan wrote:Mike Curtis: The NBA just released 2 videos to explain the new flopping violations, being tested this year on a trial basis. Players falling down not only is embarrassing (like Soccer. Good grief) for the league, and the player, but potentially hazardous to other players. Embiid better end up with about 20 of these techs. That dumbass falls over like he has a permanent inner ear infection constantly, and he could take out 3 players knees in the lane.

Totally disagree. This type of flop is the only useful flop. This flop is for self-protection, not referee manipulation. When you minimize landing stress after a 3 point shot you are protecting your ankles just in case the defender (who is flying at you) lands underneath your feet.
This is exactly the wrong flop to punish. In my opinion.
Ask Kawhi Leonard vs GSW in the finals.
Ask Steph Curry, he probably will never stop doing this flop if he sees someone about to land under him.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

I think that experience getting more touches being forced into being the lead guard will help him even more.
