Sheed getting it done

Post#1 » by Hunter » Thu Feb 14, 2008 5:04 am

I haven't looked at the actual numbers, but over this 10 game streak Sheed has played his best, most inspired ball of the year imo. He's been more involved early and I'm pretty sure his scoring is up. But his assists also have to be up. Tonight he had 4 assists again and he's able to do that because when he's aggresive it draws all sorts of attention. We've had stretches where the starters all look a lil dissinterested....except for Sheed. And it seems like he really enjoys playing w/ the young guys and mentoring them. It's great to see. Much respect to the man for stepping up and leading by example.

I still maintain that, even at 33, if Rasheed had the desire, he could be one of the best big men in the league.

He's a great defender, that turn around jumper in the post is deadly (and unguardable), and he's a tough cover for anyone.

I'd say, at full potential, I'd only put KG and Duncan above him.

part of me wonders if Sheed tuned into that eye opening Inside the NBA like two or three weeks ago, where they were talking about him.

I missed it, what was said? That he has the talent to be one of the most dominant players in the league but not the desire?

Pretty much....

Barkley said he could be the best player in the league and I believe Kenny Smith said that he could be top 3...

They were both very adament about it...

I really think the difference is the bench. When Sheed is out there with the young guys, you see him come alive. He's playing with guys full of energy and hustle... something Dice/Tay/Billups don't provide (even though i love them).

Sheed/Amir is a great frontcourt and it allows Sheed to stretch the defense later in the game, so he plays primarily in the post to start the game. Sheed comes out towards the end of the first for Max, and he knows he'll go back in with Amir out there and he'll get to be the vocal leader while not having to be the man still.

Besides fouling out and picking up a tech in the Indy game, Sheed has been amazing and really under control.

If Sheed had the desire over his career, he could have been considered right up there with Duncan and Garentt right now.
Rip Hamilton is a stain on the Pistons franchise.

Rasheed over the last ten games:
14.5 pts 6.1 rebs 2.5 asts 1.7 stls 2.2 blks 50% fg 41% from 3 and 76% from the stripe in 30.6 mpg.

During the ten game stretch Sheed has...

scored 21+ pts 4 times
has 20+ pts 10+ rebs 2 times
3+ blks 4 times
2+ stls 5 times
50+% fg 5 times
3+ asts 5 times
played less than 30 mpg 4 times

He's playing out of the post, getting alot of deflections, and really helping to bring along the young guys which will help in the playoffs.

prety much what everyone else was saying but it was sort of eye opening because EJ tried to qualify it by saying like "you mean, one of the best players, right?" and kenny/charles said no, he could actually be the best player ever, because there's never ever been a true big man who is phenomenal in the post and a great player out at the 3 point line.

i think chuck is, as usual, exaggerating, but it stood out to me because of how bold the statement was, rather than the usual "one of the best players" qualifier safe statements.

They're exactly right. Think about the dominant big men. They are post players, but push them past the foul line and the elbows and they aren't good. Now, there have been a few like Laimbeer and Dirk that can go beyond the arc, but they can't thrive in the post. KG and TD expire around the 17-20 mark. TD is at around 17 feet from the basket and has the better post game. KG can go to about 20 feet reliably, but his post game is weaker.

In his run with the Blazers Rasheed had the best post up game in the league with his dropstep into a turnaround jumper or lean in. He could go either direction, shot a high percentage and then could take you outside. All this coupled with very gd rebounding and shotblocking instincts and a tremendous ability to run the floor from his sprinting days. What he lacked was the takeover edge. He's always underrebounded for his size because of disinterest or whatever, but when he feels challenged ... watch out. That ball is his.
