Diop for Flip/1st

Post#1 » by magee » Thu Feb 21, 2008 7:18 am

This isn't a rumor, but just wondering if Piston fans would object giving up a first round pick to the Nets in return for a serviceable shot blocker that could come in for 20 minutes and clog the lane.

Yeah, I'd do that. Our pick will be somewhere around 28 or 29 and we don't really have the roster space to develop anybody else anyway. If we kept the pick we'd better off drafting somebody overseas and leaving them over there for a year or two anyway.

IF we did that though I'd actually kinda wanna move Maxiell to open up minutes for Amir Johnson. In a perfect world we'd either send Maxiell to NJ and then use our 1st to upgrade the backup SF position or do the deal you proposed then trade JMax for a SF.

This is just me smokin' cheap crack, but how bout....

Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell, Brezec (expiring) and a 1st for Jefferson & Diop? I'd have to be in 2 parts obviously, but it should work.

I know I'll get blasted for this by Piston fans, but I like RJ a lot and think he's a decent upgrade over Prince. On the other hand I think Tay might actually be the better compliment to Vince (if you keep him) and NJ gets a few other nice rebuilding pieces as well as some cap relief.

oh ive seen far worse than this. This one makes sense even!

But i really dont like RJ that much. dunno why, just not a fan, dont think he is a huge upgrade or even one at all over Tay.

Id rather just get Diop and try and swing Maxxy elsewhere for a very good backup SF

The idea of getting Diop does look good looking at it, but i can not see Joe making this move.

I like the RJ and Diop version. Actually, I like both. RJ is a bit tougher than Prince. Diop gives us a young center. Hate to lose Max but this would be a better team. The first trade is less risky - we get to keep Max, and all we do is give up a late first and Flip and get Diop.

Can we make it a 2009 first? Diop is just going to be a rental and Detroit needs to look for viable C options to develop. Also theyre gonna have a slew of 09 second rounders so it kind of makes theyre 09 first expendable.

Murray + 09 First for Diop

Don't they have to wait 30 days to trade Diop?

They can trade Diop by himself anytime, just not in a package with any other players for 30 days.
Rip Hamilton is a stain on the Pistons franchise.

Sure can. This is a deal both we and the Nets should do, but I still dont see it happening. The Pistons will stand pat.

I don't know if I want to give up a first unless we are going to re-sign Diop and know that he isn't heading back to Dallas after the season.

If we're willing to give up a first for a rent-a-player, I'd much rather it have been Kurt Thomas.

^I guess I was assuming we'd keep him. Any first we pick late will likely be at best a decent contributor off the bench (Tay being a notable exception), and Diop already can be that.

Sold. Seriously I'd do this in a HEARTBEAT. Not that Diop is so great or anything, but he's a decent backup legit Center.

Isn't this a *slight* circumvention of the CBA?
I can someday see the NBA instating some sort of rule that prohibits teams from trading with each other more than once monthly.
Yes, salaries match in both the separate trades and in the combined version (which is different than including Jerry Stackhouse but sending cash for the buyout), but it finds its way around the inconvenience of being unable to package recently acquired players.
They need to either enforce the 30 day grace period rule, or scrap it entirely.

IMO, the NBA needs to do whatever it can to encourage trades.

Do we really want Diop to be our center of the future?
I don't know if I'm comfortable trading Maxiell, whose ceiling is only that of a 6th or 7th man due to size/matchups, for a career backup C.
Both would be bench players, yes, but one would have a much bigger impact were they to be on this team at the same time.
Why swap a player with starter effectiveness for an end of the rotation player?
If I'm trading Maxiell(/Amir)and a first, I want future STARTER at a position, when either Rasheed is unsigned/relegated to the bench or Tayshaun is traded.

I'd like it, except that it'd be trading a steady, consistent player for someone who's probably going to be wearing a cast before the first round of the playoffs. RJ doesn't have a real good history of avoiding injury.
Chris Bosh is blossoming at the right time. For my fantasy basketball team.
