Chucky Atkins hasn't played for the Pistons since midway in the 2003-2004 season. He was traded to the Celtics as part of the blockbuster three-team deal that brought Rasheed Wallace to the Pistons and a few months later, the Pistons won the NBA title. Since then, Atkins has been with the Celtics, Lakers, Wizards, Grizzlies and now, the Nuggets. In other words, there's been a lot of miles and uniforms since he last played at The Palace. But Atkins still has positive feelings toward the Pistons, and The Palace crowd usually responds with a nice ovation. "I've got a lot of memories here," Atkins said before the Pistons played the Nuggets on Tuesday night. "I've been in the NBA for nine years, and I spent four of them here (2000-04). I know all of those guys over there (in the Pistons locker room), except for Rasheed. "I had a lot of fun here; it's always good to come back and play against your former team. Just to be on the court with those guys, especially for me, because I haven't been on the court pretty much all year." Atkins had surgery Jan. 11 to repair a sports hernia. He was scheduled to be out until at least the end of March but decided to return to play two weeks ago. He admits he's limited in terms of running and cutting but still believes he can help the Nuggets. "I just feel pretty good," Atkins, 33, said. "From what I was hearing, after talking to guys who've had the same surgery, whenever you have this, you're never going to come back and be 100 percent. So I said if I'm not going to be 100 percent I might as well come back and play and see what I can to do help."
Fighting for position: This is the first game in a critical five-game trip for the Nuggets. They're fighting to get into the playoffs. The Nuggets were in ninth place going into Tuesday, 2
