Re: Grizzlies possibly shopping Gay
We aren't landing a superstar in the draft and we aren't landing a current superstar through trades without giving up pieces we don't want to give up.
The best somewhat attainable current targets are:
1. Eric Gordon
2. Rudy Gay
3. Josh Smith (Bad fit)
4. OJ Mayo
5. Wilson Chandler
I REALLY want Gordon but my #2 is Josh Smith. He would be perfect for the Pistons. How could you say Smith is a bad fit??
Smith has reached his athletic peak and start to decline. Even at his most athletic he cannot play the 3 effectively. He's best suited as a 4 and we obviously don't need that...unless we sign Josh and trade Moose for Gordon and trade the rest of our expirings for Gay.
Knight
Gordon
Gay
Smith
Drummond
I really like this but is it something we could really pull off ? We would also have to draft a pg,but I really like this.
*would rather keep Moose.
The 2 trade rumors posted at wiretap the past few days scared me. That Toronto package was crazy and now Memphis asked for Love? Really? I doubt they'll move him the asking price seems insane.

Gay for Love/Pekovic doesn't really make any sense unless the Memphis plans on trading both Gay and Zbo. I don't buy it because this trade doesn't really give them a significant salary dump, plus Pekovic is going to get paid during the summer becauses a RFA.

The main reason MEM is looking to dump salary is because they don't consider themselves true contenders. So they don't want to pay luxury tax for a team thats not winning anything. But if they acquired Love, maybe they see that move as making them contenders, and thus willing to pay the tax.
A Gasol/Z-bo/Love frontcourt could be great enough to make them contenders. They could rotate the 3 bigs, but also play Love at SF and play all 3 together, which would dominate any team in the league across the frontline.
Plus, z-bo is getting old, and maybe they envision trading him in the future and building around Love/Gasol. So I can see why MEM would be interested. But I have no clue why MIN would ever do that deal. No way is Gay worth Love.

Pretty sure Memphis proposed and leaked that trade to tell the league: Rudy Gay is worth an all star. No way they trade for either player with Zbo and Gasol still on the roster.

No Memphis doesn't want to pay the luxury tax because how brutal it is. Its just not Memphis that's afraid of the new luxury tax, its the Knicks, Bulls, Chicago, Heat, Thunder, and every small market team. Why do you think the Thunder traded away Harden just after a few months from going to the Finals, or Chicago looking to trade away Deng or Noah for a draft? The Knicks let Lin go because they would have owed $50 + in luxury taxes in 2014 just for his signing.
