My plan for the offseason.

Post#1 » by piston1423 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 6:33 pm

Joe should really try to trade Stuckey for Arron Affalo. Why it works for Orlando, they shed salery and get a decent player in Stuckey that they can use as a 6th man. Why it works for us, we get a legit starting SG who can play defense and has a good basketball IQ. He's still young and will being playing at a high level for years to come.

Then Joe should try to convince Iguodala to come over. Denver is a good team for him but if Joe can convince him on his up and comers (Knight/Singler/Monroe/Drummond). Along with reminding him this franchise is about winning championships and is a proven franchise, I don't see why Iguodala woudn't at least consider it. Plus he's still has some soild years left as well.

Joe should then try to sell Calderon on coming off the bench. Calderon seems to really like this team and seems like a very open and honest person. I can see him agreeing to at least a 2 year deal or somthing. Then after Joe can sign a soild back up SG(Gerald Henderson?) and either choose to resign Maxiell with him knowing he is coming off the bench or just get another backup.

My 2013-14 Pistons would look like this:

PG Brandon Knight/ Calderon
SG Arron Affalo/Singler
SF Andre Iguodala/Jerebko/Singler
PF Greg Monroe/Maxiell
C Andre Drummond/Kravtsov

Afflalo is worth more than Stuckey. AI2 is very expensive as well...I'm just not sure we should give him such a big contract when his best athletic years are behind him.

I think we could get Orlando to bite on Stuckey. AI still a really good defender and we don't need him to average 18ppg. He's just a soild player all around. Once this team becomes good, players will want to sign with Detroit anyways so we will be able to replace AI when he gets old.

Using all the cap space on Afflalo and Iggy just spins Detroit's wheels. Sure they are better players than what is currently here, but neither of those guys are difference makers. That is a perennial 6-8th seed in the eastern conference.

Also, Iggy's game is largely predicated on athleticism. Guys like that don't age very well.

How? This is where I think Monroe and Drummond and even Knight get underrated here. Everyone is looking for a superstar in FA but they foreget they have two players who can become allstars maybe even superstars. We already have our guys, it's about fitting players that work with well with them.

Never assume guys who aren't currently stars will become stars. Always look to improve your team and gain as much talent as possible when you have the chance. This summer armed Dumars is armed with a ton of cap space, this is his second chance. He fumbled away his first opportunity and set the team back.

Making Afflalo and Iggy primary targets is a mirror to the '09 offseason. People forget just how good BG was in Chicago, dude was a straight up killer. Chuck didnt exactly suck prior to coming to Detroit either, dude was second in the ROY race to CP3 for crying out loud. Point is, you have to have larger visions when you have real assets like mass cap space. Go after big fish, then if you strike out on all those simply sitting on the cap space is not a bad idea. The available cap isn't going to go anywwhere if you don't spend it. Just because a big fish isn't caught this summer, doesn't mean you should stop angling. If you keep casting out your line, eventually you are going to get bit. But if you use up all you bait on smaller fish like Afflalo, Iggy, etc, you are forced to stop fishing.

Sitting on cap space isnt't a bad thing people. No sense in panicing with the cap space buring a hole in the pocket. You dont HAVE to spend it this summer.

I think that Orlando would be willing to trade Afflalo for Stuckey. I think we should wait until after the draft to do that, however. If we get Ben McLemore in the draft, don't trade Stuckey for Afflalo. If we don't get McLemroe, however, I'd say that's a great trade to make.

Orlando would probably do this because they're not going to win anytime soon, and Stuckey's only guaranteed for 4mil next year so they get some cap space back. Afflalo with Knight in the backcourt would be great defensively, and Afflalo would give Knight a good shooter to go to. Win-Win.
