U of M NBA

Post#1 » by gusman » Sun Apr 7, 2013 11:40 pm

How do you feel about the chances of any of University of Michigan's players being successful at the pro level? Will they all enter the NBA draft this year? All first round? Do they fit on the Pistons?

I think Burke, Hardaway, Robinson, and McGary will all be good NBA players. imo, thats why they are so successful in the tournament. They are playing an NBA style against college systems, and doing it with a lot of NBA talent.

^Agreed. Those guys will all be solid pros imo. Robinson & Burke have the most potential

I think GRIII could have all-star potential if he goes back for another year for seasoning and to be the man on the team.

1. Burke: Backup PG
2. Hardaway: 7-9th man
3. Robinson - solid NBA starter - All Star Potential
4. McGary - Solid Starter > Cody Zeller IMO

IMO McGary is the best prospect of the bunch. Great hands, great feet & left handed to boot.

im hoping Mitch stays, I figured he'd be a 3 year guy, but if he outplays Dieng tonight I think he's gone. how he projects depends on his measurements, if hes really 6'10" with a decent wingspan I think he'll be a quality starter after a few seasons of development. but I think he's going to be closer to 6'8" than 6'10" which would probably make him an energy guy off the bench.

did anyone notice a major height disparity between him and Withey? I wasnt really paying attention.

Pretty much agree with this. Since I went there I'm sure I've got a built in UM bias, but I could see...

Burke - continuing to surprise us a be a starter for the right team. Not as a rookie, but he's a hard worker and could make that happen in spite of his short stature.

Hardaway - solid player, but when compared to other NBA players, nothing off the charts. Role player, but could hang around for many years by just playing good D and playing smart.

Robinson could certainly be a star - another year at UM and have the offense run through him would be a good experience.

McGary - I just don't see him leaving this year, but if someone starts making crazy lottery promises, he'd have to consider. He's got a big body to go along with his height, so he should be able to bang at the next level. Solid starter is a good expectation.

This is how I see it, except for McGary I think has more capabaility then just a solid starter type. I think he could be a bigger David Lee.

I think Robinson and McGary go back to school another year, win or lose tonight. Similarly Burke and Hardaway are goners win or lose.

If I'm the Pistons and we end up with 7-8th pick, I make Robinson a promise to get him to come out. But ideally he goes back to school, he deferred to the vets too much as a frosh - he needs to show he can take control and "be the man". Burke and Hardaway leaving will largely make it GRIII's team next year. I think if he comes out this year, he'll never really grow into a go-to scorer, because he'll defer to the vets and play the good 4th option role.

GRIII is the best NBA prospect with the most upside. I think he'll stay though.

Yeah, because he/family are not hurting for money, he can stay another year and develop. Upside potential would probably have him 4-5 on my draft board this year though, but I'm probably a bit biased.

I don't see what everyone see is Glen Robinson. He really hasn't done anything.

I think Burke, Hardaway, GRIII, and McGary will all be successful NBA players in role-player roles. Only guy that MIGHT crack a team's starting spot is Burke.

I don't see enough either offensively or defensively out of GRIII to believe he can be more than a role player in the NBA. Only thing that stands out, IMO, is his leaping ability. His shot is suspect, he can't create his own shot - not even against college 4's, and his lateral movement defensively is below-average. He might flourish in an up-tempo offense with a true PG (Clippers maybe?), otherwise, I just don't see enough of a complete game from him.

So much of their NBA success depends on their development. McGary could be David Lee-like, but that depends on whether or not he develops an awesome midrange game and shoots 80% or better from the line. He also has more defensive potential than Lee, though he's as clueless at help D as Lee is right now. If he keeps improving his range and speed he could get into Kevin Love range, certainly has his rebounding potential.

A few weeks ago I would have said Burke could be Eric Maynor with better slashing--a league average back-up--but after watching him night after night against great defenses I have more faith in him. His handle is terrific, his step-back can't be stopped, he attacks anyone on offense, and he rarely makes big mistakes (though he was often over-cautious with the ball this year). I think he could be a difference-making sixth man and possibly a 18/8 starting PG for a mediocre team. In three years, I can't imagine him being much worse than, say, Jarret Jack and he could definitely be better.

As for GRIII, he could be a classic case of as-good-in-the-NBA-as-he-is-in-college. You have to remember that tall and athletic with good shooting/dribbling mechanics goes a LONG way in the NBA. Paul George is taller than GR, but this year GR was more efficient and generally better than George was as a freshman (and George played at Fresno St versus WAC competition). Given his size, GRIII in the NBA could shoot over lots of wings, drive and finish when there's an opening, and run the break. In other words, exactly what he did this year. If you're a NBA exec, you'd take a chance on someone with his size, hops, and raw skills. Maybe he'll become a great shooter, maybe he'll figure out how to slash at a high level. If not, he's probably no worse than most 10th or 11th men on NBA teams.

Also, I'm not seeing Hardaway as a NBA player. A bit too small, not a phenomenal shooter, not a great handle. Could be a lead guy in Europe in 4-5 years, but I think he's mostly just a really good college player who's size and skills won't translate to the bigs.

This. I can't predict if either player will be All-stars, but they all should have a career in the NBA, even if it involves riding the bench as a worst case scenario.

Small? He's 6'6, 205 lbs. Good athlete with a deceptively good vertical. Decent handle/shot, but shooting is typically the easiest thing to improve and he's got solid form. He's a prototypical SG. I think he could be a potential 6th man of the year in the right situation. I think, if anything, going to the NBA will help his game because he'll have more room to drive.

What's going on with Detroit sports teams in championships lately?

Pistons 2005, Tigers 2006, Red Wings 2009, MSU 2009, Tigers 2012, UM 2013

We can't win any championship games anymore. If not for the Red Wings in 2008, we'd have lost 6 straight championships in 4 different sports.

Bigshot, I just mean he's a bit too small to make up for the lack of other skills, e.g. being relatively slow with the ball in his hands, not being a great passer, etc. If he were 6'8 he might be a mid first rounder regardless.

I didn't realize he was over 200 lbs, figured him more around 190. That extra weight could help scouts warm to him. His best bet is to get drafted and work like crazy on his jumper, hope to become elite at that. That's all I can see him doing really well in the NBA.
