2014 NBA Draft Thread

Post#1 » by Rekindled » Sat Apr 20, 2013 4:51 am

Yeah I know it's reeeeally early.

But this year's draft class makes me sad and it's looking like the 2014 draft class can be pretty good. I actually have a specific question but I figured that I might as well just start the damn 2014 thread and hope it grows into the main one we use.

Whether the Pistons have a good/bad season and whether they try to tank or not, I mean, we already know that they won't get a top 3 or top 5 pick unless they acquire one from a team that's likely to suck really bad.

Let's assume that the Pistons have tradeable assets outside of Monroe/Drummond/Etc. Based on what we can possibly know today, I wonder which teams can the Pistons currently target for a relatively early trade that involves an acquisition of someone else's 2014 first round draft pick for a team that's seemingly likely to get the most lottery balls and land in the top-5.

Just for the sake of some examples, I'll use the list of teams with more lottery balls than the Pistons for this year's 2013 draft. How willing would these teams be to deal their 2014 first round pick? Can they even at all?
-Orlando Magic - I suppose it depends on how well this year's draft goes for them.
-Charlotte Bobcats - Jordan is probably already salivating at the idea of a talent like Wiggins in a Bobcats jersey.
-Cleveland Cavaliers - Trade doesn't seem likely with a central division rival.
-Phoenix Suns - Don't know too much about their situation but they don't seem to be trending too upward.
-New Orleans Pelicans - The Unibrow will improve but how much will that effect their win column?
-Sacramento/Seattle/Whoever? Ownership situation getting a little turbulent. Who knows what might happen and how much power Stern will wield over the situation?

so you're asking if there is a trade we could make soon that could potentially get us a Top 5 pick in the 2014 Draft?

Yeah, it's possible... I guess anything is possible!

But I doubt those teams would be willing to trade an unprotected 2014 pick. They are Lotto teams for a reason and highly unlikely to get out of the Lottery...

The only possible scenario I could come up with is:

We take back a horrendous contract and the unprotected 2014 pick in exchange for our 2 2nd round picks in 2013 and cap space

What terrible contracts exist on those teams ?

Can I offer the perspective that NBA front offices might know as much about the quality of next year's draft as you do? It's not like you have some secret info about it. If you'e not willing to trade one of the two potential above-average players on the team (Drum and Monroe), you're not getting a likely high lotto pick out of this draft.

Let me guess...You're the guy in the fantasy league who was SHOCKED that someone else took Paul George before the 7th round. He didn't have great numbers last year, how could anyone know he'd be a good pick this year? And then you tried to make up for it by offering Caron Butler for him (plus Darren Collison for Jrue Holiday) two months into the season.

I hope Monroe and Drummond blossom into an elite front court combo and carry us to the playoffs, meaning we won't even HAVE a 2014 first rounder.

with top 8 protection we finish 9th after a rash of non serious injuries lead to our drop from playoff contention causing CHA fans to lol at us and rub our noses in it...

until lotto day and we jump to the #1 spot, then on draft day... grab Andrew Wiggins.

If bazz, burke, and dipo are all off the board at 7. I guess the next three guys to consider drafting would be between cj mcullum, isiah austin, and tony mitchell. What do you guys think of those three?

It would be pretty disappointing if we had our pick next season. That would mean we effed up free agency all-together and our lottery pick didn't help at all -- UNLESS we just barely missed the playoffs as the 12-13 seed and moved up into the top-3 via the lottery.

Pretty sure the plan next season will be to make the playoffs and throw a 15-20 pick Charlotte's way.

I hope we throw them a 15-20 and troll all of the fans that think they are getting a lotto pick.
