I liked our draft a lot.

1) Monroe is a hub center who right now has two major 3 pt shooters, both of whom can also come off screens, to pass to. Knight and KCP are perfect players in that regard for Monroe.

2) Also, our guards now provide perfect spacing for Drummond in the low post and Monroe in the high post.

3) Also those two guards handle our need to improve our perimeter defense. Knight is a very good defensive PG, and KCP has excellent defensive ability - great agility and speed numbers, and good size for the SG position. Both these guys are hard workers who pride themselves on D.

4) KCP's an outstanding D rebounder from the shooting guard position. A big strength of our team is rebounding. Knight's good at that as a PG. Drummond and Monroe are outstanding at that. Middleton and Singler are both pretty good in that area.

5) Mitchell is a great high reward, low risk because he's a second rounder, draft pick. Theoretically, he's the perfect player to be in a 3 man rotation with Drummond and Monroe. Super athlete who can guard 3 positions, shot blocker - this could be beautiful.

6) Siva if he makes team is a fantastic defender - could be great off the bench guarding other team's PG's.

7) I'm a big Middleton fan and also like Singler a lot. I think even if we don't make a move for a SF, we'll be just fine there.

8) 20 million in cap space, and some nice trade assets in JJ, Middleton (who I hope we have in our rotation and NOT trade), Singler, Stuckey and CV on expiring contracts -- seriously we're in fantastic shape for reshaping our roster over the next couple seasons. I expect Joe will add a couple veteran guards and also make a decision about Slava - possibly adding a veteran big-bruising C to come off the bench as an occasional part of a big man rotation with JJ, Mitchell, CV.

We're building very well around Monroe and Drummond, on both sides of the ball. We've got the athletes and defenders now to really build a great organization that could start to contend withing a few seasons. Moves Joe makes now will be geared both to making a serious playoff run this season (in a conference where a lot of the Eastern teams weakened themselves a lot and appear to be 2014 tanking, making the playoffs for us a real possibility) and, more importantly, positioning us for some championship runs down the line.

The major unresolved question is how the Pistons handle the point guard issue. Do we go with Knight? If we do, do we run a lot of our offense through Monroe, using a type of Princeton, ball-movement, offense with great shooters and spacing? I think our team lends itself well to that, and that would mean that we don't need a true point guard. Also, is Joe now going to give Knight time with Cheeks to learn how to run our offense? Or is the team looking for a different PG, and how does that impact Knight. Does he become in the team's view more of a 6th man down the road? We need to sort this out, but we have time. As long as we get this right within a couple seasons, we're on the path to being an outstanding team.

No one whom you sign for 3/12 is going to do anything'dramatic' for us. Collison's per 36 were 15/3/6 on good percentages, with a PER of 16.3. Those are pretty meh numbers for a starter..but most starters get way more than $4m a year on the open market. He's a small relatively young middle of the rotation guy. I don't think anyone thinks he's D Rose, but he was better than Knight at pretty much everything last year.

What are the factors GM's look at when building a team from the bottom up the way the Pistons have had to?

Right now, we know we've got two powerful, potentially elite guys to build around.

We've got Knight, who has very high potential, but who we're not completely sure about yet.

We've got Singler, Middleton who are very promising - and with Middleton some of us are seeing very good player to even having star potential.

We've got two rookies who we have very high hopes for. And we've got guys like JJ and English who might develop into very good role players, and guys like Stuckey and CV who for different reasons could be excellent trade fodder in the next year.

So, do we bring in FA veterans or via trade to take over the roles our young guys will play? Do we bring in veterans who don't have the potential upside some of the guys on the roster have, but who are more accomplished players right now because they're seasoned players just to make a playoff run? Is getting our team playoff ready more important than getting some of the young guys the experience they need?

I imagine that these are very hard decisions for Joe D., Cheeks and Gores.
