Re: Free Agency Predictions
I see this free agent summer as pretty much just like the one that netted us the Connecticut connection. You have a handful of guys worth something and a ton of guys who will get horribly overpaid.
There is a rumor that if the Pelicans can't trade Eric Gordon they will waive Robin Lopez to save money (hes only partially guaranteed this year). I would think he'd be a fit for Detroit. Assuming we don't make a play for Chris Kaman.
I'd be happy with a mix of guys that fit on shorter deals and helping teams out of their cap hells for draft picks.
I'm just concerned that I'm going to read "Pistons sign Al-Farouq Aminu and resign Jose Calderon to 5 year contracts. Jason Maxiell and Marco Belinelli still hammering out final details".

Re: Free Agency Predictions
Could be wrong but think Calderone will want closer to 7 to 9 mil a yr. I don't want him but actually wouldn't mind him at 4 mil. a yr. for 3 yrs.

Why would Calderon sign with us for $4 mil a year? I'm under the impression he didn't exactly enjoy his time here and teams like Miami, Lakers, Knicks, Pacers ect could offer him basically the same money on the mini MLE.

Re: Free Agency Predictions
There's no way Calderon accepts that when other playoff teams may throw up offers to him. I'd do the s&t for Lin instead if we're paying him anywhere near 7+ mil since they would be around the same ballpark.Defor wrote:Could be wrong but think Calderone will want closer to 7 to 9 mil a yr. No thanks to taking Lin. I'd want a pick to add that salary from Houston.

Re: Free Agency Predictions
While it would be nice to land a high end free agent right now, I don't think it's essential. I'm much more interested in the long term health of this franchise looking out 2 to 4 seasons from now. When Drummond, Monroe, Knight, KCP, Middleton, Singler (or the core guys we trade for using these guys) are reaching their young prime years - and that's 4 to 6 years away for most of our players, we want to be in a position to add key players.
One of the things I liked about the idea of getting Gay is that his huge contract would expire in two years, and that in the meantime, he's a high scoring young veteran at a position we can use. (I say that while continuing to believe that Middleton is the answer for us at that same position - but he could still be a rotation player for a couple years coming off the bench).
IMO, right now the Pistons just need to make sure that they keep the flexibility they need to keep their fine young core together, while, at the same time, looking to see if their are opportunities to upgrade that very core.
What I've got no great insight on, is how the cap works and plays out in seasons to come, and how that needs to shape the acquisitions we make right now.

Re: Free Agency Predictions
I bet we sign one of Calderon or Jack, and bring back Will Bynum.
But I don't feel confident making any prediction beyond that. We need Dwight to sign before that second tier of players really fall into place.

My prediction is we bring back Calderon and end up with either Monta Ellis or JR Smith.

I wouldn't expect any announcements today given the Holiday.
