Re: CoachSearch 2013
Never thought Obradovic was a valid option. Joe D just doesn't have that kind of leverage anymore. I think that this is it for him. Playoffs or significantly huge improvement or bust.

Re: CoachSearch 2013
Sorry for the bump, but I came accross something that may be of interest. Obradovic just gave an interview, and was asked about NBA. Short translation of the part that applies to you guys...
"Nobody from an NBA team talked to me. There was contact through managers, but nobody called me directly. They had wanted an interview, but I only do interviews with the media. I feel I am still young, maybe something happens in the future. I think a lot of European coaches have the quality and capacity for NBA. You have to believe in European basketball."

Don't really want to quote myself but...
My opinion hasn't changed. Time will tell if in 2 or 3 years we're here discussing the next new coaching hire.

Cheeks is hired and Joe gets Cheeks some help via the Draft and free agency/trades.
We play well enough under our new coach to make the playoffs as a low seed... suffering a first round exit... Bobcats get out 2014 pick somewhere in the mid-late teens
We then make the playoffs again the following season... and again are bundled out in the first round!
We then fire Cheeks because "he lost the locker room/took the team as far as he could/[insert excuse here]"
Who is going to want to come here then? Once again we'd be firing a guy who did a good job with what he had - a guy who took a repeated Lotto team and made it a back to back playoff team!
Given our history with coaches who would want to follow Cheeks in that scenario?
IMO we should have swung for the fences... Obradovic was there for the taking and at least if he failed you had a ready made excuse! Instead we've played it safe and even if things go well we're most likely to be in the exact same position we're in now 2 or 3 years down the road!

If Jason Kidd proves successful in Brooklyn over the next couple of years, I can totally see Dumars trying Billups as coach after two years of Cheeks and 1st round playoff losses -- the 2nd of which gets Cheeks fired because we're the 3rd or 4th seed and get upset.

A lot has changed since then though. As in Chauncey is back on a 2 year contract now and expected to stay on in some capacity after retirement. The player GM's voted to make the best coach someday - for the second straight year. So if it played out like you suggested and we needed to make a change in 2 years, I don't think we'd have any trouble finding a replacement and could just go with Chauncey.
I personally think we would be able to attract a much more experienced coach at that point if we wanted, because we would be a legit playoff team by then, with Dre/Moose entering their prime, which would be very attractive. But certainly Chauncey now gives us a potential option that we didn't have before, if need be.
I think he has potential to be one of the best coach's in the league someday. He really has all the tools. He has mastered both ends of the game, been in every situation imaginable at the highest level, knows how to make in game adjustments, and most of all has a way of getting the players to follow his lead and listen. A lot of coach's have one or the other. They are great x's and o's but can't get the players to buy in (Frank), or can rally the troops but have no idea what they are actually doing on the court (Curry). The great ones have both qualities (LB) and so does Chauncey. Honestly if Cheeks doens't work out, we better not let Chauncey get away to some other franchise. Ideally, Cheeks is successful and we get Billups to join his staff in 2 years when he retires, learn for a few years and then become his successor.

Its been said time and time again Chauncey doesn't want to coach, he wants to work in a front office.
