Melo hasn't had much playoff success in his career, but he did take the 2009 champion Lakers to game 6 of the WCF. I think he's been a victim of never really getting to play for a great coach who knows how to put together a great team defense around him, aside from Karl, who is good but not really great and more of an offensive coach.

Other than that all he's had was guys like Woodson and Dantoni. He's also never really had a ton of talent around him.

That said, if we traded for him, he still wouldn't have a great coach here, so its very possible this team doesn't do anything special with him either. Thus, I could see us trading for him and then him leaving in the offseason.

So I think the best plan would be to trade for Rondo now (Monroe/Jennings), and then go after Carmelo in FA in the offseason. We will have a better roster to attract him, and a better chance of getting him to stay long term. Plus, if this season goes poorly, we may have a new GM/coach in place by then.

Melo would never re-sign or sign here. If he's not in NY, he's going to go to LA.

Rondo doesn't have any value until he starts playing games.

I meant now as in this season, not right now. Definitely need to see him play first.

yeah because the Lakers have such a great roster, players will be lining up to play there lol

That team isn't winning anything with or without Carmelo. Kobe/Pau are too old.

The Lakers will have kinds of capspace next year, especially if Nash retires. Gasol is a free agent next summer too, and he isn't likely to be back.

The Lakers are the Lakers. They play in LA. They have the cap to reshape their roster. That is definitely a more attractive situation for just about any player. Should it be? Maybe not - but you're kidding yourself if you think a team like Detroit will ever have an advantage over a team like LA in signing and retaining free agents. There needs to be a limited market, and Detroit has to over pay (see: Ben Gordon, CV, Smith, etc.)

The Lakers aren't the Lakers anymore since Buss passed. Just like the Pistons haven't been the Pistons since Mr D passed. It would be foolish to assume Jim Buss knows how to recreate the same success his father did, especially with an over-the-hill Kobe coming off major injury.

After seeing Dwight go there and fail, combined with Kobe's age/injury and Jerry Buss gone, I don't think stars see them as such an attractive situation at the moment. Carmelo might be dumb enough, who knows.

If he just wants to play in LA, he would be better off forcing a trade to the Clippers though, who actually have a championship roster/coach in place. Right now even a Sterling-led front office looks better than what the Lakers have going on.

Great iso scorer, couldnt spell passing or defense on his best day, has never made a teammate better.

Wouldnt move the needle for us much.

Melo would leave via free agency anyways by opting out. Makes no sense to add him. Sorry.
Call me crazy, but Melo loves money, I don't think he opts out 23 million just so he can go to a more competitive team.

Lebron James and Chris Bosh did so I feel Melo would as well.

Return to Detroit Pistons
