I view Smith as one of those guys who will never get better until he's older and willing to accept a reduced role. In that way, a coach can force him to play only to his strengths, and he'll then be able to function as a member of a contender. But by then he'll be older, so not as good, and we're not going to see that version of Josh Smith. So I'd rather move him, but I don't see who would want him at this point.

I'd prefer to keep Moose because he might actually get better, especially with a good coach and on a functional team, not a mess. Besides, by the time Drummond is good enough for us to contend, JSmoove will probably be gone and Moose will be an expiring. So long as we don't cripple ourselves by selling off draft picks 2+ years into the future, whatever we do right now doesn't really matter.

Exactly this. Smith's play is the same no matter what F position he is in. He's the Piston I dislike the most.

We'll see how much you like that shooter at SF in the playoffs when you're locked in a 7 game series with George or LeBron and have no matchup for him.

Lots of fans want to build this team for regular season success, while the Pistons are looking at what you need to succeed in the playoffs, and know that to have any chance of ever beating Miami or Indiana you need someone close to that level to match up. Smith gives you that. Just having Singler or whatever shooter isn't going to get it done no matter how smart of a player or how nice of a guy.

Unfortunately they are. These signings SHOULDN'T be long term pieces - but alas Joe D has done it again. He has killed the value of both moose nd smoove, and i wouldnt be surprised if dre's growth is being stunted. Moose is a goner and its so sad because it was a stupid move signing smith from day 1. Id feel less worse if management was letting him walk because they didnt want to pay him or something.

Teams that have playoff success have better than a 14-18 record.

Regular season success vs playoff success is a dichotomy that 50 win teams talk about. Not something teams struggling to reach mediocrity like our team talk about. Its not something where you can have one or the other. Teams built for playoff success are built for regular season success as well.

Smith will never be a small forward on a good team. Its simply not his position.

No one is saying a guy like Singler is the answer. We're looking for a guy who can hit the 3 and play D on the perimeter. If you're using the Miami heat as your measuring stick, we're not getting a 3 who can go head to head on offense with Lebron on him. We want a guy who plays D on him and spreads the floor for Monroe and drummond, in addition giving Jennings another shooter to work with.

I totally agree with you but he's a special weapon that can mess up your everyday battles.
Against Indiana/Miami - yes.
Every game out there jacking up 3s - no.

A good coach could see this and only play 2 out of the big 3 until it was necessary.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

This is the monumental problem with a good chunk of fans, the GM & new owner.

They say the bottom line is to be great again, consistently.

Yet they care about making the playoffs or what happens this year.

The term "win now" is absolutely moronic 85% of the time.

It doesn't matter until we get a coach in here who knows how to coach defense. We've seen every combination of our players on the floor and NONE of them can get a stop. Honestly, none of our front court players have been good this year, with Smith and Monroe being exceptionally bad.
