But as
YOU pointed out yesterday, sc, this move doesn't really save them cap space at all; since Deng was expiring anyhow, they're still gonna be right around the salary cap before amnestying Boozer, which means they really won't have money to make a serious play for Melo or LeBron. That said, that's cap space. In actual reality (i.e. real, honest-to-god dollars and cents), as you wrote above, it saves the team from spending around $15M during what's clearly a lost season. I cop to being a typical fan and usually only thinking of the sports side of things and thinking that all of these owners can just spend money like water whenever they feel like it, but if I ran a business that I knew wasn't going anywhere for a year and could cut $15M off the operating expenses during that down time, I sure as heck would, too.
(P.S. — I don't see Melo or LeBron going to CHI this offseason, and I certainly don't trust Rose to come back and be healthy, either. Conclusion? Chicago could be in serious trouble for a couple of years and be forced down the full-on rebuild road, which would be great for us in the Central.)
