Re: How to get our pick back from Charlotte
No team is trading back a lottery pick to another team. I don't think its ever happened in history. The only way to get the pick back this year is to tank, which I think is very unwise. You tank with these type of ego's/personalities on this team, and you aren't just going to come back next year and everything be kumbaya, just because you added 1 rookie.
So then you're looking at probably another crappy season next year full of even more dysfunction, where you still owe Charlotte the pick, but then its only top 3 protected. Which means they could finish 4th-5th worst and give up an even worse pick.
The best thing for this team is to get it together this year and make the playoffs. Give Charlotte a 15th or later pick and move forward with the rebuild already, having at least something positive to build on next year, instead of a total disaster zone.
People who advocate tanking never consider what its does to the young players that they want to keep and build around. You want these guys to develop winning habits and build their confidence up each year, not develop them into losers who are ok with losing. The only good left that can come from this season is making the playoffs, getting Drummond a taste of playoff basketball, and let him going into the summer on a positive note. With this moron coach, I'm not sure if that's possible at this point.

NEWS FLASH: Charlotte is well aware of how bad this Pistons team is. They are NOT going to be trading the rights to our pick back to us. Ever. Just stop embarrassing yourselves.

If they have any interest in Smith at all a more realistic deal might just be Smith for Gordon, or maybe Smith and our 2015 first rounder unprotected for Gordon and our 2014 pick back.

Re: How to get our pick back from Charlotte
We won't be able to get expirings for him, let alone expirings AND future considerations, let alone expirings and MAJOR future considerations, which our pick currently figures to be.
That we find ourselves in this position is such a disaster. I can't even....

I don't think it's completely impossible that we could get expirings for him, teams know that he's at worst an average all-around PF with everything he brings to the table, so his salary isn't as terrible as some of us make it out to be. I know there are at least 8 PF's making more than him right now, and likely some other guys that will be in the next year or two so it's not THAT bad.

Well, if he really is average then 4 years at 54 mill is going to be a tough sell. That's no average salary, and its a fairly long commitment too.
Generally that kind of money for an average player is something you need to sweeten the pot to get someone to take, whether that be via adding assets or taking back something negative in return.
Take note of how expensive getting out of only one year of BG proved to be.

Re: How to get our pick back from Charlotte
Charlotte fan here. I come in peace as always. We definitely do not want Josh Smith, at all. We value your pick extensively, and Im guessing from what other "experts" say that your pick will be in future trade discussions to better our team.
Don't fret, though. We owe Chicago a pick that is top 10 protected this season. They are sitting back salivating as well.
Edit: And we will not give a huge expiring plus your pick back for Josh Smith.. Come on now.

We know, as every other response in this thread indicates.
Personally I wouldn't expect either, let alone both. We could probably dump him in a move that clears up some of his salary (taking back a smaller bad contract) and get a smaller future asset (late first rounder, second round picks) but people are kidding themselves if they think we can dump him outright or get a genuinely valuable asset like our pick back for it.

I know this has been mentioned 34343 times on this board, but do you guys expect to resign Monroe? Why not just try to flip him? Or is Smiths random shooting ability (or so he thinks) that painful to watch?

The general feeling is that Monroe is not a natural fit on this team as currently constructed, and many of us also feel he wouldn't be worth what it would take to resign him either.
There are those of us who want to trade Monroe, those of us who want to trade Smith, those of us who would like to trade Smith but consider it impossible and therefor think we need to move Monroe, and those of us who'd just assume deal both.
Nobody knows what to expect. We don't even know who will be running this team when the time comes to decide whether or not to match whatever offer he gets. I'd be surprised if he's dealt this season, but I consider it worth exploring.

Lol. Well you guys have a ton of talent, thats for sure. I wish you guys would have kept Knight, I think he would have been a better fit for this team, especially salary cap wise. I am in no way saying Knight is better than Jennings, just saying hes smarter, just not as gifted, and could be better in the long run

Re: How to get our pick back from Charlotte
You'd be lucky to get expirings for Josh, let alone a high first in this draft.
Laughable.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy
