Looks like we traded Tayshaun in time

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Fri Jan 17, 2014 6:26 pm

From ESPN today:

Tayshaun Prince, Memphis Grizzlies

Meet the least valuable player in the league so far -- according to WARP. The 33-year-old has been a tire fire this season as the Grizzlies' starting small forward, posting a minus-1.9 WARP, which means that he's cost the Grizzlies two wins compared to a guy at the end of the bench.

For a team like the Grizzlies in the thick of the race, those two wins could be the difference between a playoff spot and the lottery.

Now that Prince has oddly abandoned the 3-point line for a team that is starving for treys, his value as an offensive player has just about vanished. He's not a shot creator and he ranks dead last in catch-and-shoot efficiency among the 82 players with at least 100 plays, according to Synergy. His solid defense keeps him from appearing higher on the list, but even that is waning as he ages. Recent free agent signee James Johnson could be starting before long.

We should have never gave him that last contract....glad we traded him instead of allowing him to continue wasting away here.

Sort of works out. We got Tay paid, but don't have to do the actually paying.

Yeah he's really dropped off. He seems like one of those guys who just got taken out of his comfort zone (Detroit) and has lost something, maybe aggressiveness.

We essentially traded him for an expiring contract, so it's not as if we gained anything more from it than Prince's cap hit being gone. It was a dumb contract for Dumars to sign in the first place.

Anyone else notice a trend here? All of Dumars trades aren't to better the team- but to try and get rid of a bad contract he gifted out. Terrible GM. I don't care where this team finishes- this summer will be a success if Dumars is promptly fired and told to take Cheeks with him.

You should be. I'm sure he already has a 4-year 40 million contract drawn up and sitting on his desk, waiting for July 1st.

I can never stop being a die hard fan even if we suck but that would drive me into serious depression.

I'll be honest, I thought resigning him was a mistake from the go. At least dropping him didn't cost us.

I do feel badly, though. I never had an issue with Tay. He just outlived his usefulness.

In the immortal words of Indiana Jones, "It's not the years, it's the milage." Tay literally went to the Eastern Conference Finals (or deeper) the first six years of his career, and he was an iron man during that run who never got hurt and always played heavy minutes. His crater-like drop off is sad, but predictable; he's just way older in basketball years than his chronological age.

Most 30+ vets are overpaid by the end of their contract, thats just how it goes. You guys are acting as if FA's are kicking down the door to play here but Joe chooses to stick with his guys. Even if we get a new GM, FA's will want big bucks to play here and we will have overpaid Vets at some point.

Joe is a master at that. He did the same with Ben and Chauncey.

We owed Ben a big contract for all he did, being that he was only making like 6 mil/yr during those championship runs. But to pay him a huge contract at that point would've been only paying for his past work, because he was starting to decline. So Joe let Chicago pay the bill instead.

Same thing with Chaucney, who gave us championship production on an MLE deal. Then when it was time to pay him big money for the work he put in, he gave Chauncey the new deal, but then traded him and let Denver pay the bill.

Keep Stuckey? He is a productive SG off the bench. But pay him like a starter? Noooooooooooooooo.

I agree with you - Joe totally overpays his guys. Always scary when he is reaching for his (actually the Owner's) checkbook.

Wow, being 33 isn't that terribly old but he has gave it his all in the past glory days I guess...why he got resigned I have no clue and really does speak volumes as Dumars as a GM.

I think his numbers aren't indicative of his actual impact, much like when he was here. I'm not saying he's been great this year or even good, just that he plays in a system, does what is asked of him and never tries to do too much. He's never been an efficient scorer because he can't draw fouls, never grabbed a ton of boards because he's played with good rebounders, never accumulated a lot of assist because he's never been asked to run an offense(that had talent anyway), doesn't get steals and blocks so was underappreciated as a team defender during his prime. All that being said, he's a solid offensive option that can shoot a little, get to the hole at times and good on the break, solid rebounder, solid passer that makes good decisions and takes care of the ball and a very good team defender that occasionally was out-muscled in some match-ups.

let james johnson start. prince still a good player that can help memphis, but for the grizz to expect this guy to start for them, as they have, and as he's done, was a reach.
