What do you have against Hollins?

The fact that he reportedly wants the job with Dumars still at the helm. Any coach worth anything would run far away from the Pistons situation as long as Dumars is he GM.

Where is that report from? I haven't heard that, but that's not a bad thing if true. Dumars has won a championship, so its no indictment of Hollins for wanting to keep a proven GM.

That's interesting though, because if it comes down to Hollins + Dumars or neither, what do you do?

I'd definitely keep Joe and hire Hollins. Unless Phil comes here and says he wants to take over the front office AND coach, I don't see where we are going to find a better coach than Hollins. And whenever Joe has had a real legit coach, he's succeeded, so I would keep Joe if it meant we got Hollins.

^Definitely neither. BUT if Hollins comes in, Dumars should get extended at the same time. Can't have a head coach with 3-4 year contract and then try to hire in a new GM either.

Dumars won a championship - TEN YEARS AGO. And he hasn't been able to build a team since, with two chances at basically full rebuilds. Makes me beieve strongly that it was dumb luck combined with Laker implosion.

Was it dumb luck when he got back to game 7 of the Finals the following year and nearly beat the Spurs too?

It was a long time ago, yes, but the fact is there are very few GMs available that have won championships. So its not as easy as people think to just change GMs and you automatically get someome better.

I agree though that if they do hire Hollins then you probably have to extend Dumars too. A week ago I would've been fine with cleaning house, but I really like a Hollins/Dumars combo and if we are getting him, I'd be cool with keeping Joe.

So long as Dumars is only doing drafts, I'm okay with him sticking around. But someone else needs to be signing/extending players and coaches.

It was the same team who got there the next season. I give him credit for that team, but as I said he's failed virtually in every key decision made since. And in his wildest dreams I don't think he expected Ben Wallace to become the defensive dominator he did when he demanded him in return for S&T Grant Hill.

I think the reason why Gores will wait until after the season to do the coaching search is because he hasnt decided Joe's future. If we get the 8th seed then Joe D stays, if we miss out then hes gone and it makes no sense to hire a coach now only to have a new GM come in and not like what he sees from said coach.

My fear is that Joe reaches at the trade deadline to try and extend his stay and we pay for it in the future.

I like Hollins just fine, but I think if we are up against any other team then he wont be coming here. There was pretty strong backlash last time around that Detroit was now seen as a death trap for the futures of NBA coaches.

Frankly, I have no faith in Dumars conducting the search and after he passed on Burke only to trade for Jennings, I have no faith in him making the right draft choices anymore.

I know that Doug Collins has been mentioned here before, but hes retired. Nate McMillian is still out there, who interviewed last time. If Hollins is the guy why wasnt he looked at last summer? Nothing has changed.

Also, how much of Hollins strong defenses was because of Dave Joerger?
