Will the Hawks look to tank soon?

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Sat Feb 15, 2014 4:43 pm

They've lost Horford for the rest of the season.

They've lost 5 in a row heading into the All Star break.

And now there are rumors of Teague falling out of favor there and might be made available pre-deadline.

Could we offer them Jennings and CV (expiring) for Teague and Korver? They basically play their young guys the rest of the way and tank....reload for next season when Horford is back:

Jennings
SG (draft or free agency)
Carroll
Millsap
Horford

I'd to something like Monroe, Stuckey, Siva and, Villanueva for Teague, Krover, carroll and Willams.

Why for Detroit:

Because we upgrade at PG, SG and SF,

Teague/Bryum/Billups
KCP/Willams/Singler/Krover
Singler/Krover/Caroll
Smith/Mitchell
Drummond/Harrellson

Why for Atlanta:

They're tanking plus they can add a great young big to their group of talented big guys. Convince one to off of the bench and that's a good rotation. Plus while they are tanking, they clear up a little cap room, get to look at how well guys like Monroe and Siva do for their team. If they don't like what they see, they can always get get rim of them easily too.

It's pretty hard to tank in the East when you start out so strong.

Tough to say. I'd assume they'd just go for the playoff revenue and maintain their competitive plan.

Although, if a great offer came along, I could see them biting on it. But, any deal featuring Brandon Jennings isn't likely to pique their interest.

So we trade all of our flexibility and the best player in the trade. **** stupid trade. Where is Jennings in your equation?

I feel obligated to say that I doubt Dumars would even be allowed to make a trade like Jennings for Teague. Teague has an extra year on his contract and I don't think Gores will want Dumars making any personnel decisions which carry long-term implications. Besides, can you imagine that conversation? "Hi Tom, it's Joe. Listen, I know I may not be here past this season, but I wanna trade the guy I traded for a few months ago for a similar player with an extra year on his contract. Sound good? Hello? Tom? You still there …?"

As for Jennings, I did forget about him. Might have to trade him too.

I'm not even big on any of Atlanta's players anyways. All I'm saying is, if Detroit/Atlanta became sudden trade partners and they wanted to tank, we wanted to finally get rid of Stuckey and CV and really really wanted to unload Monroe? Those are just the players who I'd like to have in a trade with Atlanta that I think make sense. I honestly don't even want the Pistons and Hawks to even become trade partners.

Hawks fan here. This is actually something we've been debating on the boards for a few weeks. Should we tank? Are we tanking? Teague has received some sporadic PT of late and the rumor is he could be had for the right deal. Same for Louis Williams.

I don't see us tanking at this point. Our GM and coach have done nothing to make us think this the plan. The Hawks are in a bit of a funk, but we're looking to continue our playoff streak for a 7th straight year...longest in the conference (NBA?).

Ferry's plan is to load up on solid role players with high BBall IQ who fit a need and work well in our system.

But this is VERY tempting. Hawks leadership would at least have to consider it as Monroe and Millsap keep us in the playoff chase...

Don't see why they should look to tank TBH. They're exceeding expectations. Most had them missing the playoffs, even with Horford fit. They've got a lot of high motor guys on that team who are trying to prove their worth and maintain their position in the league, and they'd have to literally stop trying to miss the playoffs from here, so I can't see it happening.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Horford is the only guy I would want from Atlanta, he would be an amazing fit next to Drummond. What's the rule on trading for an injured player? Could we swap Monroe and CV for him now or can he not be dealt until he's healthy?

Don't forget that the Hawks are the kings of the "let's get to the 2nd round" model as evident by the Joe Johnson years. I think they stand pat.

And they kind of have to be too, as nobody in that city really cares less about the team, even when they're winning, so when they're bad, it's terrible all round.

Yikes! Feel like you guys are piling on my city and my team....but sadly, everything said above is true.

Notes:

1. Yes, teams can indeed trade for injured players just the same as trading for any healthy player.
2. Hawks tired of topping out in the 2nd round. Thus new GM. New Coach. New approach with new players.
3. We agree Horford would look amazing next to Drummond. Only way that happens, though, is if you guys want to send Andre to ATL. He'd thrive under our new coach playing next to AL and Korver.

Hawks aren't dead yet. If things keep spiraling out of control as they are now, that could change in the next few weeks.

What would it take to get Mike Scott from you guys?

Mike is a stud. Cheap. Young. Filled with potential. He's not a building block player for us, but we value him greatly. But i expect a 1st rounder would force us to consider gifting him away.

He is a restricted FA this summer, so we have his rights for at least another year.
