Leadership and attitude have been the two biggest fails ever since we traded Chauncey for AI. We've had a steady stream of C list coaches since LB left and paired that with a steady stream of mental midgets when it comes to BBall IQ. We've failed to develop young players (Darko-Stuckey-now I worry Monroe) or given away guys like Amir & Afflalo & potentially this year's draft pick in order to get cap room and used that cap room to assemble the "idiot all stars". We've held onto guys like Rip & Prince for too long and given we could have cap room this summer the Jerebko & Bynum deals are worse than people have realized. Can you imagine where we'd be had we taken Udoh over Monroe and anyone beside Drummond?

I think it's on ownership as much as Joe though. Joe's always been the same, the difference is the last 10 years the rest of the league has gotten MUCH smarter. The undervalued guys used to be the guys who didn't run or jump the fastest or weren't the tallest (ie Chauncey & Ben) only now it's shifted to the "undervalued" guys being the dumb ones (Smith & Jennings). Ten years ago Smith & Jennings teams never would have let them get away. Joe still has that old school mindset.

I'm trying to figure out why Gores would allow Joe to sign Smith to such an amount of money to play out of position but wouldn't trust him to hire a coach, as if his free agent decisions have been any better than his coaching hires. Maybe Gores liked it because he thought it would put butts in the seats, maybe it was Gores idea and that's why Joe is still around, for now anyway. Just seems so weird to me. Not only does a coach cost so much less but it doesn't count against the cap either. I'm tired, I've been up all night and just worked a 12 hour shift but I can't make any sense of this, my mind is blown. Something is fishy for sure.

We're all just speculating. He obviously has some level of pride, but pride don't pay the bills.

1) Joe has plenty of $, or at least he should anyways.

2) Contrary to popular belief, Joe is pretty well regarded within league circles and it probably wouldn't take him long to score another job if he chose to pursue one. There is a reason why a lot of Joes' guys (John Hammond, Scott Perry, etc) have been pursued by other teams. He may not land another GM job immediately (although it wouldn't be out of the question) but its safe to assume he would be getting some calls.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I still think the moves of Smith and Jennings were the best out there for Joe. Knight wasn't bringing back Rondo or anything else like him. Joe holds guys too long for sure. I think Joe needs to move Monroe before the deadline. Monroe will become the next TayShaun, Stuckey, Knight and so on. It will set the roster back again. I think Joe is gone after the all-star break if nothing happens. No need to keep him.

If Dumars is going and has no power, what is Gores waiting for? The sooner a new, empowered GM is in place, the better.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Gores is not going to dump Joe so close to the trade deadline, that makes no sense.

While Joe has taken a beating in some circles I'm certain he's still well respected around the league for the way he conducts himself. Yes, other GMs still want to swindle him but they hold Joe in some esteem.

The smart move right now is to leave Joe at the helm & get him to pass on all trade proposals offered up to the deadline. Joe wouldn't be allowed to make offers or counter offers without permission from Gores though.

Unless an offer comes in that is "too good to refuse" we'll stand pat...and Joe will move on after the season
