James Dolan ~ Tom Gores.

James Dolan was born into riches...NEXT.

From Wiki:
After originally pursuing a career in music, Dolan eventually switched to a major in communications at SUNY New Paltz and began working for Cablevision in various capacities including sales before eventually being dispatched to Cleveland by his father to manage the launching of a sports radio station. In 1995 he was made CEO of Cablevision.

I don't know either of these men personally, so I'm just not going to even try to debate it. Gores has shown quite a few streaks of impatience during his time as owner. A trait that's frequently attributed to Mr. Dolan.

I blame Dumars first and foremost, He's the GM who constructs the team. The owner obviously expects him to build a playoff roster in a offseason where we have 20mil in capspace, a #8 overall pick and a star Frontcourt. And Dumars managed to F up everyone of those things again. If I was the owner I would definatly expect to see a much improved roster coming out of all that too. Instead Dumars fed us all a pile of crap roster once again and another crap fired coach, while here we are with the same record and 2 cancerous players.

Gores certainly knows the world of finance, but he's a friggin moron as a professional sports franchise owner.

Dumars and Gores should be the stars in the Dumb and Dumber sequel currently being filmed. Pistons might just be the most inept, poorly run Owner/GM combo in all of professional sports at the moment. I really can't think of a worse one right now.

Milwaukee bucks anyone? As much as I hate our position, that organisation has gone through far worse. As gores obviously doesn't have a basketball mind he relies on who he hires and his right hand man is a moron. I strongly believe if we fired dumars and hire a gm that actually uses his brain and knowledge we can turn things around pretty quickly

So fair theres no evidence that Gores has Dumars to sign or trade players he didn't want to like Dolan has prone. I know some people here like to think the Smith signing was all Gores, but Dumars has been wanting him since 2008.

I believe it's quite fair to compare attitudes and behaviors of people. Detroit didn't have a whole lot going for them entering the off-season last year, yet Tom Gores wants the organization to be in a "win-now" position? That's a joke.

Dumars spent a lot of money attempting to fill an obvious gap in the roster, assuming everything else would come together? Detroit needs a GM that's fully committed to reconstructing the Pistons' foundation. Detroit's front office took an amazing gamble that completely backfired on them this season. These guys just need to own up to their losses and move forward. This is something I believe neither Gores or Dumars are capable of doing. They'll attempt to roll the dice again.

I hate to break it to you, but Joe has been trying to put a win-now team together for the past 5 years. Its probably a big reason Gores had the those expectations and Joe probably put those in his head and he could never follow through. People can whine all they want about not tanking, it wasn't going to happen know matter who Joe had as an owner, because hes been pretty adamant hes against tanking.

Gores is a bad owner... but his main job is signing checks. If he's signing checks, he's pretty much doing a good job.

The person who wastes money on inefficient players and has shown a complete disregard to basketball intelligence is Joe Dumars.

Joe is good at drafting and trading, but bad at free agency. Unfortunately, he is bad enough at free agency to undo all the good he does with drafting and trading.

Its his mess. Yes its a talented mess, but the least he could do was find a coach with the bball IQ and courage to get the best out of it. Instead he wastes time with subpar coaches, and that's going to cost him.

Without a Larry Brown or Rick Carlisle or elite level coach, Joe D has no chance to succeed in todays NBA. His vision of the game is expired.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

Regardless of the thought process Gores has, the idea that he's aligned with Dumars to whatever extent is terrifying.

Time to bump this thread up, as we ready ourselves for Joe's resignation.

I want him to stick around in a lesser role. It'd be weird to see him join another organization.

Its official, Dumars is done. About 5 years too late, but well better later than never. Its a good day for the Pistons organization.

http://www.nba.com/pistons/news/detroit ... al-changes

The Detroit Pistons announced today that Joe Dumars will step aside as President of Basketball Operations, effective immediately. The team has launched a search for a new head of basketball operations.

IBTL :-) Wait, I can lock and unlock it, never mind :-)

Finally, moving forward. Can't wait to find out who our new GM is, certainly someone that I've never heard of before.

Cheeks and Dumars were fired (essentially) this season.

Should we start a dedicated "trade Smith and Jennings" thread?

The Fire Cheeks thread worked pretty fast.

This thread, however, was started back in 2010.

Sad to see him go, and having crossed this finish line and looking back, this race should have been shorter.

Would this be the same Joe that traded a decent hustle bench guard and a decent back-up small forward for Brantanimo Jennings?

Oh - it was? Just wanted to check.

A good job it's not the same Joe that nearly lost us our pick in a deep daft (and may stil have done) to correct a mistake he made years ealier.

Oh - What! It is that Joe?

Huh.... then I don't agree with you.

This thread still doesn't have closure as Joe is still technically part of the team. He should have no part with with any basketball operations if we are truly trying to move in a new direction.

This thread unfortunately will keep on truckin' until Joe is completely gone.

He doesn't have anything to do with basketball operations.

His contract runs through June, and he wouldn't resign. They had to move him, unless they wanted to risk a breach of contract, in that event they could be liable for punitive damages and compensation.
