Karl was COY last year and wants to coach again. He and Warkentein (EOY in 2009) worked together in Denver and Seattle. Both available.

He's the definition of a regular season coach. Only missed the playoffs twice in his 25 year career, yet only got out of the 1st round in 8 of those seasons.

1131 career wins and a losing record (80-105) in the playoffs. Vastly overrated in my opinion. If Gores just wants to fill his mandate of making the playoffs, he's definitely the guy to hire, but if you actually want to build a foundation that can eventually win championships, he's the wrong guy.

Ding ding ding. Agreed.

Not to mention, he got completely abused by Mark Jackson (who I'm not big on as a honorary GSW fan) last year in the playoffs. The lack of key adjustments and being stubborn kills his overall ability as a coach.

Bingo!

Karl had so many ridiculously talented teams and couldn't get any traction with them.

Hard Pass.

I'll pass on Karl, I could see him coaching the Timberwolves. I'm still hoping we hire Hollins.

I wouldn't mind stan van gundy with a team built around andre similar to the magic built around dwight, we need to get a bunch of 3 point shooters in the offseason.

Agree with Q00. Just hire Lionel Hollins.

There's a plan!

Bring in Larry Brown for the playoffs, SMU's season should be finished by then.

Not my 1st choice but I'd be ok with it. Nothing wrong with having a "regular season coach" when you are this bad. It's going to take this team a few years. If we were already a playoff team and trying to go deeper then if say no. But 3-4 yrs of Karl? I can think of worse things.

I don't trust SVG after he mishandled the Dwight Howard situation so badly. It may be why he hasn't coached since.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I think SVG's lack of hiring has more to do with SVG calling out the Tragic front office. It'd be amusing to get the Van Gundy brothers as a GM/Coach tandem, thinking about it.

I don't think there was a way to properly handle the Dwight situation at that time. I have a hard time blaming SVG for that. Otis Smith was more of a dumbass. The Tragic are the Tragic.

Beggers can't be choosers. I don't believe Karl would even want to come to Detroit. I don't believe Detroit is very attractive from a front office, team, and obviously city perspective. His name doesn't do much for me nonetheless. A coach that playoff tested and battle worn is most likely rigid with his philosophy.

Detroit needs a coach that can not only command with his voice, but is not very rigid. Teams are finding success with coaches I haven't heard of until recent years. I would assume those guys aren't very traditional to say the least.

I would think a coach who can teach our players and get us into the playoffs would be the goal. Im just not sure how Gores is going to get that title contender coach you guys seem to want. I personally would be looking for that Carlisle instead of Larry Brown.

One of the results of having Phil win 11 titles is that there are few coaches who have the resume your looking for. Hence why college coaches are getting run. If you want a winner you need a college coach because there arent any NBA coaches that have a ring that you can hire.

IAM BACKKKKK,

Seriously tho,who ever det decides to go after, they better do it quick.I have this feeling it will be a repeat of the last few coaching hires, wait until the last second when all of the quality coaches are gone and then put our hat into the ring.Just hire hollins and get it over with, but if hollins gets picked up,george wouldnt be a bad runner up.
