He measured just under 6'6, which is great. Gary Harris, his chief positional rival measured at 6'2. That's a huge win for Stauskas. If Nik measures well in the agility tests tomorrow, he could shoot up a lot team's draft boards.
Doug McDermott measured at 6'6 without shoes. That's got to hurt him big time. Noah Vonleh also measured at 6'8, again quite a bit shorter than advertised.

This is OT, but this description of measurements is a little confusing. Stauskas measured 6'6.5 in shoes, Harris measured 6'4.5; there's a two inch difference between them, not a 4-inch one.

And McDermott was almost 6'8 in shoes, good size for a SF. Vonleh is nearly 6'10 in shoes, which isn't undersized at all for a stretch PF. Also has a great wingspan. When we talk about players' heights casually--Jordan was 6'6, Monroe is nearly 7 foot, etc--we're generally talking with shoes on.

This is killing me. Gary Harris is 6'2 1/2, Nik Stauskas is 6'5 1/4. Close to 3 LEGIT inches. The difference between them is Harris chose to wear shoes that he was able to put extra padding into, and Stauskas knew he was legit height so he put some real shoes on and got measured. Who plays basketball in shoes that have 2 inch soles?

Didn't notice that, thanks. I don't have an agenda--don't like either Stauskas or Harris at #8--but it was a confusing that some were in shoes and some without. Seems easier to list all w/o shoes and then add the 1.2 inches (what shoes area supposed to add) in your head. Also, seems like Vonleh's measurements were a boon rather than drawback--don't a huge wingspan and gigantic hands make up for his being closer to 6'8 than 6'9?

Oooooh, the "I know you are, but what am I" attempted deflection rebuttal. Figures. A cost that has not yet been incurred is not a sunk cost. Neither is planning on making a bad decision to then write off as a sunk cost. You don't sign Monroe to a near max contract to come off the bench - OTOH Smith is already here, nothing can be done about it now - so his contract isn't a factor in how you use him.

A cost that has already been incurred IS a sunk cost.

I didn't say Monroe was a sunk cost right now. I said he will become one once he is resigned.

How can you say Smith is a sunk cost because he's already here and signed, and then not understand why Monroe would become one too once he's signed?

Once he signs that guaranteed contract he becomes a cost already incurred. At that point it doesn't matter where you choose to play him, or play him at all, because you are obligated to pay him that cost regardless.

Like Stan said, you pay a player what the market dictates at the time, but then after that you play/use him however you want because the money has already been spent.

If you want to get technical, no NBA contract is a sunk cost (unless it has a no trade clause) because the cost of the contract can always be retrieved by trading it. However, considering trades aren't guaranteed to happen and rarely do, its more practical to assume all contracts as sunk costs once they are signed. (You've agreed to pay the cost of the contract and you're likely going to be the one paying it.) So what you do with that player during that contract is up to you.

That doesn't mean its a good idea to pay Monroe that much to come off the bench, but once you pay him, it doesn't matter where you play him. The money has already been spent. At that point its about doing what is best for the team to succeed.
