Average attendance rank for the last 10 years:

2014 - 26th
2013 - 28th
2012 - 28th
2011 - 18th
2010 - 8th
2009 - 1st
2008 - 1st
2007 - 2nd
2006 - 1st
2005 - 1st
2004 - 1st

Point being, if you don't put garbage on the court, we will come out in droves. People coming out in droves = money. Say what you want about a market, but find me an owner who doesn't want that kind of foot traffic at his venue, night in and night out.

The last few years have been really really rough, but don't kid yourself, the D is still a very very profitable market, Detroit's economic woe's included.

I don't know what makes a market desirable to you, but tons of paying fans seem like something that would qualify. This least desirable market thing is a joke.

Exactly, Dumars has been putting out a crap product for way too long now instead of just letting the team bottom out. There hasnt been anything exciting on the court until we landed Drummond. The casuals start to come out for the first few games and instantly get turned off by the product on the court. Start winning and they will come back.

I'm thoroughly surprised by 2011. 18th? It was clear we were bad then. Thought it would've been mid 20s. Were people that excited to go see Brandon Knight? Lol

By the way, thanks for the numbers. Like you said, that "least desirable market" shtick needs to die fast.

Some of that is probably due to season ticket holders keeping their tickets in hopes things would turn around, then pulling the plug after seeing 2 straight wasted seasons with no direction from Dumars.

The only problem with the data I put above is the great recession happened to coincide with the team turning into a hot mess. There's really no way to tell the effect that would have on the numbers.

Other than that, I stand by my statement. DETROIT VS. EVERYBODY!

Precisely.

Unless you think 20-25 teams are in one of the "least desirable markets". Then at that point that classification doesn't mean much.

Detroit's economy is screwed, the population is plummeting etc.

There is not a city in the rest of the world that is experiencing the kind of decline that Detroit is right now.

The 1st time I heard this was during the oil embargo of the 70s. I heard it all through the 80s and then in the 90s. Guess what its tough everywhere but Washington DC.

The market just isnt the city of Detroit. Its the entire state of Michigan, 25% of Ontario, 25% of Ohio and 10% of Indiana. Its a pretty big market with about 10 million people. More importantly its in a cold climate so there are more eyes on TV than in a warm climate. I live in Phx and during the winter when its 75-85 degrees Im not going to sit down next to the TV and give up valuable outdoor time. Now that it is 110 I am locked inside all summer just like if I had 6ft of snow outside.

The increase in the value of the Toronto teams is all about the strength of the Canadian dollar which is dependant on its oil production and its huge trade imbalance with the USA. One day our leaders will wake up and decide they want to stop the madness and Ill be able to buy 3 canadian dollars for one US like I did in the 80s.

Great post. It's pretty closed minded to parallel people moving out of Detroit to the Detroit market not being a good one.

Gores might sell when the team is back playing well but when that happens were usually at the very top in attendance. Pistons did lead the league in attendance for the majority of the 2000s.

Gores only bought a portion of Karen Davidsons ownership of the Pistons. There are other owners who did not sell, and she kept some shares as well. So that $350 million is not the value of the organization as a whole.

I have no idea about the credibility of this source, but if true Gores bought most of the shares:

http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20110605/FREE/306059954/-shocking-bargain-gores-pays-325-million-for-pistons

Karen Davidson owned 76 percent of the Pistons and will maintain a single-digit equity stake. The remaining 24 percent was split among several people, who agreed to sell their shares when she sold the majority.

The transaction includes the Pistons and Auburn Hills-based management company Palace Sports & Entertainment. PS&E includes 22,076-seat Palace of Auburn Hills and DTE Energy Music Theatre and holder of the contract to manage Meadow Brook Music Festival for Oakland University.

For what it's worth I don't think he sells any time soon. Especially if the team gets back to playing well and making money.
