If we continue to be a Minnesota Timberwolves type of team, then I fully expect Drummond to leave after his second contract. Even if Drummond turns into a superstar, there is a pretty good chance that we still won't be a good team with how poorly we've been run in recent years and a lack of draft pick this year. I wouldn't blame him for wanting to leave if that was the case to be honest; it's a very similar case to Kevin Love. When you're on an incompetent team for so long, you want out.

However, if we become a contending team during Drummond's second contract, then I don't think he'll leave. He doesn't really seem to have the Shaq or Howard personality. He seems more mellowed out than most potential superstars. I think we'd have to get to the ECF at least once during his second contract for him to stay though, anything else and I would assume he would leave.

Why?

Yeah, that's actually pretty rare. Melo forced his way to the Knicks, Shaq went to the Lakers. That's all I can think of for superstars in their prime over the past 25 years. Beyond that, those teams drafted their stars--Magic, Ewing, Kobe, Bynum--and got secondary guys through trades and overpays. D12's one year in LA shows that most guys care a lot more about winning and finding a good fit than they do about being in LA/NYC. Look at SA and OKC: tiny markets with really white, conservative populations and pretty much nothing going on for a young millionaire, yet both have had no problem keeping multiple top-20 players. By the time Drummond is in his 5th-6th year, we need to be a good team. Shaq and Lebron rae the only guys I can think of that left contenders, and they were once-a-generation players.

Some guys like Melo seems to really care about media attention but most stars aren't going to let that decide things for them. Take Durant, Curry, Westbrook, etc. Plus all the negative attention focused on Lebron has made that move a much more unsavory one to younger stars. Even Love wouldn't want to leave if MIN had made the playoffs a time or two.

I lived in SA for four years and I have to correct this. The San Antonio metro area has population breakout of 53.8% Hispanic/Latino and only 36% White. I wouldn’t call them a “really white” city at all. Just the opposite in fact considering traditional minority races make up well over the majority. Also, calling it a conservative city is not entirely accurate either. 46% of the population identified themselves as liberals in a voting research poll. That number is growing every year too. Their current Mayor is one of the left’s most popular politicians. He was a speaker at Democratic National Convention and is one of the key leaders in immigration reform. Lastly, SA is not NY or LA but it’s not OKC either. I think you really need to plan a trip there and see for yourself because you don’t know the city at all.

Thanks for the correction. I was speaking broadly about its appeal for pro basketball players and guess I lumped it too closely with OKC. However, the area is 6% black, which I'm guessing would be one of the bottom 3 or 4 of NBA cities. And my impression when I'm there (I've been there maybe half a dozen times) is that it's a culturally conservative place--power seems to be in the hands of the military, energy companies, and financial companies, and the tone seems to be set by them. Just based on my experience, it feels more conservative than most cities.

Also, for a city to be 46% liberal is really low! Boston, Philly, Dallas, Atlanta, NYC, LA--those places are all at least 75% liberal, not to mention the places like Chicago, Detroit, SF/Oakland, DC that are like 90% liberal.
