If we kept the 9th pick, who would they have taken?
For the sake of having a new topic, let's talk alternate history where the lottery gods don't take a dump on us.
Who would SVG have taken 9th if 1-8 played out exactly the same, and you can't trade up or trade back.

Re: If we kept the 9th pick, who would they have taken?
Given that we'd only have kept it if we'd drafted 8th, it's probably more fun to speculate the 8th pick.
It would have been fun to have drafted Stauskas, which I assume means we don't sign Meeks and spend that money elsewhere. Caron's money + Meeks money could have made a better offer for a SF, yes?
If it's 9th, we probably draft Vonleh even though it wasn't a need. BPA. Elfrid Payton would have been interesting, too, which means we probably don't sign Augustin.

Also interesting about either of those scenarios is that we'd almost certainly be losing our pick to Charlotte this year -- knowing the pick is gone might have affected the rest of our FA choices, too.

Stauskas, no doubt. He was the first player SVG approached and only acknowledged McDermott in passing saying, "I'll get an interview with McBuckets later".

Tough to say if we can't trade back.
Stauskas is a great fit on offense but he can't play defense and KCP really isn't a SF, so it'd be sort of awkward to have spent our last two picks on jumpshooting SGs.
McD can really shoot it and is a SF, but I was really down on him so I'd hope that we don't draft him despite the fit.
Payton would be an enormous upgrade on defense at PG but he's a Josh Smith-level shooter who can't even make his free throws, so the spacing would be worse.
Vonleh would only make our PF logjam worse, and he can't pass at all; unless SVG really likes the look of his jumpshot I'd be really hesitant to take him.
Saric was never planning on coming over even before the Sixers drafted him IIRC. Plus he doesn't have much of a jump shot, which you'd want out of yet another PF. I'm interested in the guy just as a basketball player, but IDK if he's our dude.
LaVine is overrated as hell, and I want no part of him.
Stauskas or Payton would be my pick-as a UM fan I'm really tempted to go with him, but I really like what Payton can do outside of shoot. I think that I'd go with Nik because good PGs are available every season, either as free agents or in the draft, so despite how nice Payton looks I think that he's more replaceable.

It would have been either Stauskas or McDermott in my opinion. Looking at it now though I would have taken Lavine easily. His potential looks pretty high with Carter type of athleticism and a real nice shot.

Trade down for TJ Warren. I think he'd be a good fit. Helps to spread the floor a bit and midrange is money. Also good on D.

Re: If we kept the 9th pick, who would they have taken?
IMO the only two players he would have taken would be Staukas or McDermott.
Personally though, I feel Vonleh would have been the smartest and best pickup. I think he had the perfect game to compliment Drummond and could have been our pf of the future, and to all those saying we already have enough power forwards.... While we have quantity we don't have quality. Monroe is as good as gone, jerebko sucks and smith is heavily over paid. I'm calling it now, we missed out BIIIIG time!

Seeing Stan Van close up over the last few months, I think Doug McDermott is the pick.

We probably would have taken Vonleh, but knowing what I know now I'd take McBuckets, or maybe Payton.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: If we kept the 9th pick, who would they have taken?
Dougie Mcbuckets no doubt
SVG states, DRE is our future
A stretch four that can score the ball from the high post if not further, is exactly what you'd want to compliment your center. I really think Dougie was the reason we inquired about keeping our pick.
Didn't SVG draft Ryan Anderson?

No, Anderson was drafted by the Nets and traded to the Magic after his rookie season

Thank you Pop, in either case, SVG targeted players like anderson and Lewis to compliment howard, i think he'd do the same in the draft. I am really curious as to whom SVG had targeted and wanted so bad that he tried to keep our pick

Re: If we kept the 9th pick, who would they have taken?
Given how much Stauskas skyrocketed up teams' boards the last couple of months, it could easily have been him until he went 8th. McDermott certainly makes sense, too. Neither is a 3 defensively... but then again, neither is really anything defensively at this point.

Re: If we kept the 9th pick, who would they have taken?
Im guessing Stauskus goes to the Kings regardless so he is going 7th.
I would have liked to trade with the Suns and picked up Warren/Payne and Ennis. If not I trade with the Bulls for there 2 picks and Bynum for Dunlevey. Draft Ennis and Hood.
