Should we have gone after Afflalo?

Post#1 » by sfballa13 » Fri Oct 31, 2014 6:47 am

Afflalo was traded to the Nuggets for Fournier and the 54th overall pick in the draft.
--If we went after Arron, our offseason and roster would have been dramatically different.

The trade would have been Mitchell, Datome, KCP (5.4M) for Afflalo, Harkless (9.4M)
--That extra 4M is what we paid Caron Butler (4.5M a year) so we actually save 500K. We also wouldnt need to sign Martin since Harkless would play his role.

We still would have gone after Augustin and traded for Joel Anthony, but most importantly we wouldnt have blown 6M on Meeks.

500K saved on Butler + 1.1M saved on Martin + 6M saved on Meeks = 7.7M extra to spend

SVG then offers Paul Pierce a contract worth 15M. 10M guaranteed this year (5M team option next year) which is double what Washington is paying him over 2 years. The money is roughly 2-3M more than what Gores spent on this year's team.

Jennings / Augustin
Afflalo / Singler -Dinwiddie
Pierce / Harkless
Monroe / Smith - Jerebko
Drummond / Anthony

Afflalo and Pierce would have brought some much needed stability to our team and guaranteed us a playoff spot in the East.

Both the trade with Orlando and signing Pierce are feasible and realistic moves that very well could have happened. No way Orlando turns down the KCP instead of Fournier. No way Pierce gives up 5M and a key role in our line up. Even with Afflalo, Pierce would have a larger role in our lineup than in Washington

Not at the expense of kcp,we dont want a repeat of AA all over again by trading kcp to another team to blow up.

Just keep reminding yourselves we had a GM that did nothing right for 6 years besides lucking into draft picks my grandma could've made. All we have to focus on now is the new staff and our future and core.

AA will be retired by the time we are ready to contend. No need to give up young players for vets that would make us a treadmill team.

Depends on the asking price. I would have given the 38th pick and some trash off our bench like Denver did.

Detroit can always chase Afflalo in free agency if KCP and Meeks turn out to be duds who can't start on a playoff team.

We should have taken Meeks' money and signed Lance Stephenson.

Afflalo is a guy you add to a roster that has Jennings/Smith

Adding Stephenson to the Pistons would be like driving a gasoline truck into a burning building

But Lance does make em dance so who knows

X2

Lance's contract is beyond ridiculous considering how high his talent level and potential are. I think with a coach like SVG, lance would have behaved himself

He easily could have played SF for us since he is capable of guarding Lebron, Melo, Durant

no way. too small, i can't emphasize enough how important size and length in the NBA are at every position. really helps defenses close on shooters and with tip rebounds

Yes we should have chased Stephenson hard - but forget playing him at SF full time.

As for AA - I'm a big fan of his work but we certainly shouldn't have given up KCP for him.

Learn from Joe's mistakes, don't repeat them

I still see too much apathy in Jennings and Smith. Stephenson is crazy, no doubt. But, at least he plays with passion in his own special, insane way.

Note, I wasn't a big supporter of signing him this summer. But I realize we need some wing players who can create for themselves and others.

Yes but without giving up KCP. I'd have given them Singler and a future 2nd or something along those lines.

AA could have started SF for us, would fit SVG's system perfectly (3 & D guy) and with Jennings in the backcourt, having 2 lockdown wing guys would have been great..

Lance is definitely too small to play small forward though and it would be wasting his talents
