To the whiners and bellyachers, and the half dozen people who still employ logic. SVG isn't concerned with just getting the wins. He's still installing his defensive system. He isn't making many adjustments because he's trying to get this team to the point that they can play competent team defense before specializing assignments.
It gives a better look into why Joe Johnson was able to rattle off 34 points.

Re: Good read on what SVG is doing defensively
The article didn’t tell us anything that we don’t already know- Drummond is lost on defense. Interesting that SVG singled Monroe out as the guy with great understanding of his defensive schemes. Help defense shouldn't be a foreign concept at this point, the guys need to get it together

Shocker..were a work in progress. Hell this is probably the first time some of our players have had actual quality nba coaching. So no I'm not shocked drummond is taking time to learn and adjust, as well as others.
Nice read and id rather Stan build it right for longevity than just pull a quick fix. In SVG I trust.

I'm all for a foundation. That's what he's attempting to establish here, and there's definitely more positives to take away from these three losses, than any win Detroit had all of last season.

Re: Good read on what SVG is doing defensively
Am I crazy or did I hear that we had a top 10 defense at the start of the broadcast? I mean, I know our games have all been like in the 80-90 range or something so I would believe it. I also heard we were dead last in a few offensive categories, which obviously explains the 0-3 start.

So stan doesnt mind the chucking,as long as smith gives the effort on the other side of the ball.Sounds like excuses to me.I thought stan was all about efficence.

You also must remember he is the President of BBall operations too. I doubt he wants to trash Smith or reduce his minutes if he want's to ever have a chance at trading him. I wouldn't be surprised if SVG is keeping Smith in the starting lineup just to try and boost his value (not going so well so far though lol). It wouldn't surprise me since SVG has shown several examples of focusing more on the future end product than trying to win at all costs right now.

Yea,thats why I commented on the excuses,I dont really believe stan is all for smith chucking up shots,he has to play the game until smith is gone.
So sad because he could be such a great player if he would only limit himself to 9 shots.

Yup, could actually be a decent glue-guy/jack of all trades.

I love it how people think just because a player is having a good or bad week, it drastically changes their trade stock. Front office executives and coaches aren't stupid, they have detailed scouting reports on every single player in this league. Everyone knows what Josh Smith is....a good or bad week isn't going to change that. A good or bad month isn't going to change that. So pretty much regardless of how Smith is playing at the current moment, the same teams are either going to be interested or not interested in Smith. No GM goes man, Smith has really played well the last 4 games, lets make a deal for him....or Smith has been off to a terrible four games to start the season, we aren't interested anymore.
Smith is getting minutes because he's a big part of this team and for this team to play at its best, they need Smith playing well.

I disagree. I wasn't saying that GMs will change their position on a player after 4 games, but several months? plus last year? Yeah that can make a difference. Players get overrated based on short term performances all the time. If Smith is lighting it up in SVGs system for a month or two then teams will be much more inclined to take him and think that Smith can be good if used correctly. If he sucks for 2 straight months then GMs may start thinking he is washed up and losing his athleticism or something like that. SVG is a smart guy and I doubt he would willing choose to have Smith on his team if it were up to him.

Re: Good read on what SVG is doing defensively
Smith is the same player he's been, nothing has really change about his game. If there were serious signs of his athleticism declining or anything like that, absolutely....but there hasn't been. His biggest and just about main weakness is his shot selection, and that's always been a weakness of his. It hasn't changed, dude.
His contract isn't bad either, he's only making $14M a year....which is nothing the way people are starting to get paid. If a GM feels like Smith is a fit for their team, it won't be because Smith is or isn't a good fit in SVG's system unless their team is running a similar type of system. Part of the reason there isn't much of a market for Smith is because the trade market in general is pretty weak right now.
