You know in nba 2k where the FA refuses to negotiate if you lowball them with an offer? Yeah, that would happen.

Yeah, it'll have to be above 12m. Someone said his hold was like 10M, and since we got his birds we can go over the cap to sign him. That's the best part about this.
As long as he's willing to hold out till we're done using the money on UFAs/RFAs, then I don't really mind paying him a large amount :). Win-win.

USE A SPECIAL PITCH, SVG. Bring him back to the table and then use Grass Is Greener!!

I really think Greg just wanted Smith gone. He wasn't going to sign a long term extension and then be marginalized as a backup to Smith when he saw how damaging a presence Smith was first hand. He exercised the leverage he had available to not lock himself into a bad long term situation.

Those saying that only one player per team can get the 5 year max are correct.

Monroe won't be getting such a contract.

This is incorrect. Only one player can receive a 5 year max extension of his rookie contract, it does not pertain to Free Agents

Your conspiracy theory is correct if you look at it in terms of benefiting SVG and the Pistons franchise

But there is no way Monroe went along with this plan because let's say this year he has a career ending injury that's it he just lost out on 40-55M for no reason.

Monroe is taking a huge risk because weird things can happen even during scrimmages (Paul George) let alone during competitive games.

Greg more than likely wants to be a starting center and knows teams could really use him,I think he wants to go somewhere were he can be that player, after seeing what players got last fa period,I dont think moose wants anything less than a max,and once the playoffs are over and teams whos center position were exposed will go after greg this summer.
