Since waiving Josh Smith (incredible stats)

W-L= 11/2 (2nd in the league)
+/-= 9.2 (2nd in the league
Off eff= 109 (4th in the league)
Def eff= 98 (3rd in the league)

Just mind boggling what a turn around this team has had. Even the one of the loses which was against the Hawks we came all the way back to make it a 3 point game but missed the final shot. The other loss was really ugly to the Pelicans but we were pretty fatigued after like 6 games in 8 nights.

I have been eating tons of crow on this and loving it. Blaming Smith seemed like a lazy answer to everything and I thought we wouldn't get much better or would even regress a little without him. It's been incredible.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Smith shouldn't have played a single game for the Pistons this season. SVG really screwed us over with his hubris.

Ugh, I know! Fire the guy and bring back Kuester!
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

He was evaluating the entire team, including Smith. When you have that kind of investment in a player with talent, you at least try to make it work. I credit him for making the right decision and having the moxie to waive him.

This whole thing is unprecedented. Simply waiving someone that got paid as much as smith has never been done before (to my knowledge), the fact that we were the second worst team in the league before cutting him and the second best team after is, quite simply, mind-boggling

instead of retroactively complaining you should be thankful. no other coach or president wouldve had to balls to pull the move he did.

Gores wouldn't have set a match to 40 million dollars without seeing if it could work under SVG. Would you? Seriously, can we be a little bit more mature around here?

I feel like anthony tolliver has played a roll in this as well. He is a very positive person.

agreed. Tolliver has been a nice addition, and with him, and j.j. on the roster, it is a very nice luxury to have two stretch 4's to go with one of our bigmen at all times.

It's a huge boon for the team.

It's basically like we trade Smith for Meeks, Tolliver and JJ. :)

I'm guessing the rumors of Monroe wanting Smith gone were true

Like I said to death on here for the past year +, EVERYONE aside from the previous coaching staff & front office, SVG for the first few months of his tenure & a few RealGM posters understood how absolutely atrocious that guy Josh was. Literally the dictionary definition of "anti win"

I'm a Bulls fan living back in Illinois now. Lived in East Lansing, Michigan for a brief couple years (Go Green!), so I definitely kept an eye out on the Pistons. Even met Josh Smith once at a nightlife establishment in the D once. Really chill guy, definitely likes to have fun off the court! Prolly a little too much fun heheh. Much much nicer dude than I thought he would be.

That being said, you should be thanking your lucky stars that SVG waived him LOL. Why would you be pissed off at SVG when the Pistons are successfully executing a turnaround? Unless you truly wanted the team to tank all the way, you should be happy that this team is bringing some excitement back to Metro Detroit along with a potential playoff berth. It was a win-win for the Pistons & the Rockets. Despite his immense talent, Josh Smith is far better off as a top role player than a franchise player.
