Porzingis. He's playing in the second best league in the world as a 19 yr old. Question will be if he's there when we pick - Sacto would seem to be the biggest threat.

We do have a pick to deal if we like.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

yeah i like Porzingis, I think he's really being undersold (not by scouts, but by the fans).

Yeah he's not a bruiser but he doesnt need to be because he can shoot 3s and he has quick feet. Drummond is the best rebounder (other than not boxing out) in the world so we don't really need Rodman at the PF position. I really want to see how Porzingis looks in workouts because like Kilo said he's already producing in the 2nd best league in the world. (which is something Darko was definitely NOT doing... so please leave DArko nightmares out of this!)
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

People need to give up this S&T stuff, Monroe has no incentive to agree to a sign and trade, and unlike in years past where the hometown team could offer more years + a higher raise % you can't do that in a new CBA. If we lose Monroe, we will lose him for nothing.

I said a S&T to New Orleans cause he is a good fit there and its his hometown. I'm not sure but aren't they close to being capped out?

I used to think there was little chance of signing Monroe but now I think he may want a one year deal so he can cash in 2016/17

You're wrong.

We're the only team that can sign Monroe to a 5 year deal and as his "home" team the higher % still applies.

There are some rules regarding S&Ts that have changed but those stayed the same in order to "protect" small market teams from becoming "farm" teams for the league.

You are the wrong one here. Detroit can only offer Monroe 5 years +7.5% yearly increases if Monroe remains a Piston, in a sign and trade we cannot offer him those things. There is no scenario in which Monroe has incentive to weaken his new team by forcing a S&T, nothing more than pipedream at this point.

Sign and trade contracts are reduced to a maximum of 4 years, with 4.5% percent raises. These are the years and raises used for non-bird players. In the past CBA, you could give the player maximum raises for maximum years if you had their bird rights, which would be 7.5% raises over 5 years in the current CBA.
Teams more than $4 million above the luxury tax cannot receive players in a sign and trade deal. If a team acquires a player in a sign and trade deal, then the team cannot go $4 million or more above the luxury tax for the remainder of the salary cap year. There were previously no restrictions.

sign n trade Q/A by David Mayo:

Q: I don't see Greg Monroe coming back. This summer the Pistons can pay him the most, correct? So how likely is a sign and trade? -- B, via Twitter

A: It isn't likely.

It sounds good in a vacuum and there might even be teams willing to pay Monroe the amount the Pistons can pay him (yes, the Pistons can pay him the most, which we've gone over in this space recently).

The only one who clearly benefits from a sign and trade is Monroe, who could get the Pistons' maximum offer without actually playing for them and must agree to his new team, though he already has full control over the latter. It's just the money differential.

What advantage is there to the trade partner? That team can sign Monroe outright to a four-year contract. In a sign and trade, that team has to agree to take on Monroe's Pistons-level contract, then turn around and give up something, to boot. A lot of teams that might like Monroe won't like him under those conditions. They don't have to get fleeced to get him. They don't have to give up anything to get him. So why do it? If he wants to play for you, he'll sign with you. You move on to the next free agent if he doesn't. You could diminish your own team by giving up something good to sign him, and if you aren't giving up something good, then. ...

What advantage is there to the Pistons to execute a sign and trade? If they're taking something back for Monroe, it has to benefit them, too. If a team is giving up something of real value, maybe you could work something out. But again, it has to be a team willing to pay Monroe the maximum amount, for which he agrees to play, and which is willing to give up something for a guy who is available without giving up anything. In other words, a dumb-dumb. The guy who shouldn't be at the poker table. As for what teams actually might give up to sign a player who can be had without giving up anything, well ... if losing Monroe without compensation might seem difficult to take, accepting the toxic contract(s) likely to be packaged in any sign-and-trade offer(s) could be far more bitter.

The Pistons probably either re-sign him or lose him, cut and dried.

Mayo, once again, doesnt know what he's talking about
93. Why would teams or players want to do a sign-and-trade?

Teams benefit because they can get something in return for players they would otherwise lose to free agency. For players the benefits are limited. Under previous CBAs a player who qualified could receive a full Bird contract and go to the team of his choice, which encouraged the player to seek a sign-and-trade once he decided to play elsewhere. Under the current CBA a player receives the same contract via sign-and-trade (four years, 4.5% raises) that he could get by signing with his new team directly, and can receive a larger Bird contract only if he stays with his previous team. In addition, it is much simpler for the player to sign directly with his new team, as a sign-and-trade has to be agreed to by three parties rather than two. A player is really only forced to seek a sign-and-trade if he wants to go to a team that is capped-out (or doesn't have enough cap room to give the player his full starting salary) and can't sign him directly.

Another factor encouraging a player not to seek a sign-and-trade is that his new team might be weakened by losing players or draft picks in the trade. So while a sign-and-trade is a useful tool when the team does not have the cap room to sign the player directly, the player and his new team have little reason to seek a sign-and-trade when the player can be signed without involving his previous team.

Thanks for clearing that up Pop... it ain't easy breaking away from the old CBA... possibly the only reason a FA and new team might consider a S&T is if they had a player at the same position at a high salary where they could now use the extra space to acquire an upgrade at a different position.

Pistons could be better on both ends after losing Monroe. They need floor spacing on offense and athleticism on defense. They may downgrade in talent but they'll almost certainly upgrade in fit.

If he impresses SVG, I love this. Sign Middleton or Green to a huge deal to play SF. (or wait to address SF long term for next year or by trade)

Keep an eye on Frank Kaminsky. Maybe Myles Turner, though I'm not very impressed to be honest. If Monroe is gone, finding the PF of the future to open things up for Drummond + Jackson with this top 8 pick is most important.

If Monroe returns, draft the best SF available that can make an open 3.

Monroe replacement

Post#37 » by ComboGuardCity » Sun Mar 22, 2015 6:43 am

I'm a sucker for miracles.

1. Win draft lottery.
2. Spurs get swept in the first round.
3. Pistons draft KAT.
4. Pistons max Leonard. Spurs decide to let him walk.
5. Re-sign Reggie
6. Dre agrees to a max extend.

Jackson/Spencer
KCP/Meeks
Leonard/KCP/butler
Towns/Tolliver/Leonard
Drummond

Draymond Green & Jeff Green as PF's??

Some of you really learned nothing from Josh Smith.

Draymond Green is in fact a PF, that's the position he starts and and the position he plays all game. This "Dray is a SF" stuff needs to die. Jeff Green is only a small-ball PF, but I wouldn't put it past Stan to use a small-ball line-up full time.

Amir Johnson is really the best answer if Monroe walks. Dude can shoot and is a good defender at both big man positions.
