OKC fan here... can Singler guard SGs?

Post#1 » by Luca Brasi » Mon Mar 2, 2015 9:31 pm

Hey guys.

I've been really impressed with Augustin so far, and Singler has filled in well as KD's replacement while he's been out.

Just curious... with KD coming back, I'm trying to figure out how Singler fits in. I would love to start him at SG to have a guy with KD and Russ who can knock down open 3's and play some decent defense.

But can Singler guard 2's? He's guarding 3's pretty well, but does he have the quickness to stay in front of 2's?

Singler is usually too slow to guard 2's for the most part.
He's started at SG before, but he's much better suited to SF.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess there's no way for him to fit in with the starters then.

I don't think he's fast enough to cover certain 3s, let along 2s. He'll be a solid shooter off the bench for you, but on a good team he probably shouldn't be starting regardless.

That's great feedback, guys. I appreciate it. I'm hoping now that we go with a lineup like this:

Russ/Waiters/KD/Serge/Kanter
Augustin/Morrow/Singler/Collison/Adams

I like the looks of that bench!

So your thoughts on Reggie and the trade a few games in?

If you play him as a starter like we did, you'll get tired of him.

But backing up KD at the three is a very good role for him. He's a smart player, does whatever he can to help get the W, but on the downside he is streaky, and not that great athletically, which leads to issues on defense against faster players.

I'm ok with it so far, bit of wait and see mode. I really liked DJ, but he wasn't part of our long term plans, same with Singler at least as a starter, so I'm fine with what we gave up.

RJ has struggled a bit so far, but I think a lot of that is still learning SVG's offense and getting used to his new teammates. Talent wise I think he has a lot of potential, and I like his athleticism and length. Love the potential of him and KCP in the back court, so we'll see...

I think Singler got a bad rap here. He's a fundamentally sound, team defender. He's not a good athlete and will struggle in 1-on-1 matchups. That's going to be true at the 2 or the 3 and will limit him as a starter in either role. Fortunately for Singler, there aren't a whole lot of athletic, high scoring wing players in the league today, so he can get by most nights. If you are looking ahead to possible playoff matchups with Klay or Harden....... I definitely wouldn't be counting on Singler to stay in front of them.

Here's a list of what Singler is really good at: 1) Catch & Shooting

The end.

^This.

Singler can't even guard Singler. He is just a decent bench shooting option.

When you guys first traded for Singler, i believe some posters where referring to him as a poor mans Korver. 10+ games in, how do you feel now?

I like Reggie's size, strength, and athleticism. He's slowly getting the offense, getting a feel for his teammates, and getting comfortable with playing his game. I like him. I liked him when he was in OKC.
