Why do people insist on ignoring the fact that even the 2004 team still had a well spaced offense?
The Wallace brothers wouldn't have functioned nearly as well as a tandem if neither of them had range.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it wasn't a prolific offensive team, but it at least wasn't one you could literally stop every time by clogging the paint.
I feel like there's way too many people on this board operating with a vague sense of defensive idealism (in your case mixed with a healthy dose of nostalgia). Its not only outdated but in this case also at least partially misframes what made that team great in the first place.
The same attitudes to a lesser extent lead to the majority support for Stanley Johnson as well.
I mean, I think that perfectly sums up those Pistons teams.
The Wallace brothers were part of a slow offense that was still able to get things done when it counted, and a huge part of that was Rasheed's ability to step out and hit the jumper.
A front court of Drummond and WCS wouldn't have that characteristic at all.
Sure, it would be slow, but it would also be way, way too easy to stop in most circumstances. Even slow offenses aren't allowed to be that easy to defend, at least not if you want to have a good team. Slow might have been what you wanted to emphasize, but it isn't the most important thing about an offense that would have Drummond and WCS.
We're talking about if WCS can hit open jumpers though, that's what started this thread. That being said, if SVG thinks he can then he is easily the guy I want. If he can't, I still have strong interest because his defender will have to at least know where he is because of lobs and put backs, this on top of his stellar defensive potential. These attributes easily make him one of the 3 bigs we need for a nice rotation, Drummond of course another and probably Tolliver for a year then a similar "stretch" guy after that. I think he's a safe pick as well as a guy with underrated potential, with that I mean a big difference maker regardless of stats.
I also don't believe we would have to add a 20ppg guy at the 3 if we were to draft him. If we add a SF that plays solid defense, shoots well enough and preferably can handle the ball some, we would be just fine while having a defensive identity.
