Geez BK, such hubris! Five posts in a row?
Illyasova seems like a great move to me. Just considering what the Pistons gave up to get him, it qualifies as that kind of deal. (The second year is only guaranteed for $400,000!!!?)
A point to consider is that you don't get a guy like Carroll to grow with Drummond. You get that guy so Drummond can grow. IMO, a point that can be applied to the Illyasova acquisition as well. Clearly, the Pistons are pinning their hopes on Drummond. Drummond is entering his fourth year in the league. Everything about the circumstances says it's time for him to take that next step. (OMG, shoot your FTs better!) If SVG is trying to use available resources to ensure his system can run correctly, I applaud him. (It is his job.) Roster management is an ongoing process. Picks are great, but there's only room for so many players. IMO, tanking is bad for team culture.
I count myself among those who consider Dinwiddie an intriguing prospect. He had some pretty nice games for a 2nd round rookie PG coming off an ACL. Reggie is a very solid point, with reasonable hopes for improvement as he matures into the heart of his career. Yes, I think the team views he and AD as the basic core of the team. KCP's scoring has been inconsistent, but his work ethic and professionalism are not. This is a big season for him as well. No one on the Pistons has "proven" anything. It's a limited number of players in the league who could be said to have done that. The Pistons have a lot of ?s, but to then list Embiid (might not play at all his second year) as an example of the superiority of the 76er's approach seems a little strained.
I've remarked before that I didn't like the way SVG handled Smith. If team culture is an issue, I don't see how the approach helped. When Smith concentrates on doing what he does well and avoids his weaknesses, he can be a net plus. Smith behaved in a very unprofessional manner on the Pistons and essentially was rewarded for it. I don't recall him being benched or even sent home. IMO, some of that and, if necessary, negotiating a buyout would have reflected better on the Piston organization. His representing a 5.3M (?) nick in the cap until 2019, and the Pistons subsidizing another team, isn't a great result. McHale didn't seem concerned about acting like a coach where Smith was concerned?
Overall, I have to say SVG for the most part has made moves that have improved the team without tying his hands in the future. I'm sure there are things about the Smith situation I don't know, so Stan gets the benefit of the doubt going forward. Being a fan isn't an entirely rational process.
