As my sidebar reflects, my fandom of teams has nothing to do with geography. My allegiance to teams grew naturally due to my own personal experiences with and factors surrounding those teams.
Honestly, I'm a go against the grain natured person. I'm from Indianapolis, so from a very early age the Pacers, Colts, and IU were forced down my throat. It didn't take me long to start to seperate myself from the umbrellas of each of those teams. starting from the time I was like 7, the only connection I have to those teams are being an avenue to attend professional sporting events and watch teams and players I actually like. I will never set foot on any IU athletics property.
Personally I never really got the geographic attachment most fans have with teams. I understand the whole hometown team aura, but really very few if any players are actually from the area the team represents. Most of the players on teams didn't choose to be there, they were either drafted or traded there. College teams is a little different story, because those kids actually chose to go to their respective schools, and did so with numerous other options on their table. They wanted to be there.
Getting to the point, yes I would still be a fan if the Pistons moved. Although the Pistons moniker is very Detroit motivated and would likely be changed.

Re: Purely Hypothetical Question Re: Team movement
I'm from Australia, so I didn't have any ties to Detroit/Michigan, but since being a Pistons fan I've become more interested in Detroit.
When I moved to Toronto, i was able to visit a bunch and enjoyed it. I'm even a lions fan now
I would be very sad if the Pistons moved. I can't say for sure if I would still be a fan because I'd see it as a big "F*** YOU!!" to the fans in Michigan. Especially if Gores moved the team after saying he wanted to be part of the community and all that jazz.
I always find it sh*tty when teams move.

Obviously a Raptors fan but before they arrived cheered for Buffalo & the Pistons plus lived in Bloomfield Hills for 4 years in the 70's.
Met Lanier at a some clubs during my stay 2 of my friends were 6ft 11 and 6ft 10 ( both very tough white duds ). Felt bad that Pistons had fallen so badly and am happy they are on the upswing. Looking forward to moving back to Canada late spring want to take a couple road trips to see both the Pistons and Cavs. By the way used to be a great rib joint near Cass Lake is it still open?
Looking forward to tonight's game especially clash between JV & Drummond.

They still hate the OKC ownership there and consequently the team since it's no longer theirs. I'd easily stop following the Pistons and follow the Warriors (my 2nd team) or even the Knicks.
I actually rooted for miami over okc in 2012 so yea... no way i could root for the team if moved out of MI.
