So, how much did Otto Porter learn riding the bench before finally getting it this year? Not all players will learn to play right by being gifted tons of minutes. Most have to learn the hard way like everyone else.

Would he not experience "the hard way" in those 20-25 minutes?

I think there's a fine line between force feeding "developmental" minutes and "gifting" minutes to a rook. It's a matter of opinion which is which really.

We can actually claim SJ was gifted minutes this season - Bullock played extremely well when SJ was injured and then got shunted to the wall when SJ returned.

We are making that assumption after watching 82 games in a season. SVG makes his decision after watching 82 games on film probably more than once, practice sessions, practice review sessions etc. IF SVG thinks SJ is the best player in the rotation, i am sure its not "just his best guess".

There really is no argument, if you want a player to develop, the more minutes the better. If SJ as a rook almost won a starting job and took over the 6th man role, i'd imagine he'd deserve minutes on a lottery team as oppose to being "gifted".

I think I trust SVG who has taken players like JJ Reddick, Ryno, Gortat, Meer amongst many others and made them all overachieve. They all rode the bench alot in their rookie seasons. And, you can ask any one of them who was a major influence on their success and they will all say SVG. If a player ain't playing for SVG, then there is a reason. Playing time to SVG isn't the reason a rookie succeeds in his system.

I don't think anyone wpuld dispute SJ could fill the stat sheet logging 30 minutes every night for a Lotto team Blkbrd.

I thought the debate was developing a rookie the right way?

In all honesty it depends on the player and organisation. You don't want a young kid that doesn't work hard getting minutes simply because you're devoid of talent - it teaches entitlement

What you want is an organization strong enough that they'll pull a kid when needed, regardless of potential or wins or marketing.

When JJ , Ryno, Gortat, Meer all sat, were they on winning teams or Lottery teams?

Also JJ, Gortat, maybe Meer were not as NBA ready as SJ is or was day 1.

*I am not debating the effectiveness of SVG's developmental system

I don't think there is a "formula" to developing a player the right way. I think each player is unique and respond differently. What ultimately matters is the said players DRIVE to develop and improve. You can have the best development program in the world and if the player lacks work ethic, it won't mean sh*. SJ's personality doesn't come off as someone who is content.

Having said all that, SVG's "development" system phenomenal and their are productive players in the league today that are proof of it. I don't know if SVG has ever had a player like SJ before though. Extremely versatile which makes me excited.

Side note:

Reports are that SVG "would like to see SJ focus more", per SJ " being benched really locked me in"

8-)
