In recent history, we had two trades (or rather, 1 trade and 1 non-trade) where the consequences weren't tangible at the time. Now they are, so I figured it would be a good time to discuss the trades.
Trade 1:
Pistons Out: Donatas Motiejunas
Pistons In: Henry Ellenson
Obviously none of us have any insider info on what the doctors saw, but our final risk assessment came to the conclusion that he was not worth it, especially seeing as how we would have to spend money to re-up him. Who knows how much he will get after the non-trade probably lowered his value, but seeing what Mozgov got, if we had made the trade, we would have had to either lose him or likely pay close to $20 million/year. That's just a little less than we are paying our three FAs combined. This means we probably would've rolled with another year of Blake or Brown as a backup and done little else to address other needs. Motiejunas, if he were to stay healthy, would be a tremendous fit next to Drummond and would improve us for the upcoming season, but the combination of cap flexibility and injury risk makes me glad we ended up with Ellenson who can hopefully provide something similar in a few years.
Trade 2:
Pistons Out: Jodie Meeks
Pistons In: Boban Marjanovich & a future 2nd
Alright, this trade isn't completely tangible yet as we don't know who that future 2nd will be, but essentially we made the move for cap space, whether it be for a shot at Horford or just flexibility to make other moves. The money ended up being available to use on Boban. Could we have used a healthy Meeks this year? Certainly. I would argue that someone of Meeks' abilities at SG was more important than a third C. I think Meeks at his best is a definite upgrade from Hilliard and Bullock - at least for now. However, we have no idea if we would be getting Meeks at his best. Can he play the same way he did for the Lakers anymore? Is he rusty? Likely to get injured again? We may have a logjam at center now, but I love the idea of trying out Marjanovich because he can solve the cap flexibility issues related to Baynes' player option next year.
Overall, I'm happy we made (or didn't make) both moves.

Now That the Trades are Tangible
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

You have to include Leuer along with ellenson. We essentially would have gave up our capspace as well if everything with motie checked out. Maybe even ish too.
Leuer/ish/Ellenson for motie, Marcus T.
I'll take the former fills in more holes and no injury concerns.
I also think motie's back is a real concern. No one has offered this man a contract yet. There's a premium on stretch bigs right now and he's one of the better shooting bigs in the league right now. Ryan Anderson just recieved a larger contract from the same team motie is an rfa with.
The Jodie for boban and a 2nd remains to be seen I have to see what boban will bring for us. At the end of the day though It's a plus considering Meeks was injured majority of his time here.

Trade 1: That one is tough because I'm not a big fan of either Motiejunas or Ellenson. I'll say Detroit won that one though because Henry is younger, on a rookie contract, and doesn't have the back issues while being a better shooter.
Trade 2: This is easier, I really like the outcome of moving Meeks. He could have helped Detroit this season but Bullock has proven to be just as serious of a threat from the outside while playing much better defense. Jodie gets to the line and is better with the ball in his hands but I'll take the 3&D wing. Moving him allowed the Pistons to make a real run at Horford which was nice even if it didn't work out for them. But getting Marjanovic on a relatively cheap 3-year deal as well as a late second round pick is still great. Love it.

I would change that to:
Pistons Out: Donatas Motiejunas
Pistons In: Henry Ellenson and Leuer
Advantage Pistons.
As for Meeks, I am sure now that he is in the last year of his contract, he will put in his best effort with the new cap to maximize his next contract in 2017. Then, he can go back in IR for whatever team wastes their money on him.

Motiejunas's cap hold is ~$5.72 mil, we certainly would have had the cap space to sign both Ish and Leuer, though not Boban.
