Personally in his place I'd go. It's a rare opportunity and he has 5 years of financial security at this point. Good way to build relationships with other stars too.

Right, but they rented a cruise ship to avoid the sh*tty living conditions... point being it's not great there and it's totally reasonable that people would not want to go.

Then again, any American basketball player could replace Harrison Barnes at this point.

He was guaranteed both a spot and playing time... He would've been in Jordan's place.

As a Piston fan I'm ecstatic he didnt go to Rio!

Stay home, work hard and get your rest for an important season.

Put yourself in his shoes

Just signed a max deal, no need to worry about injury

Would you skip out on the Olympics for ANY reason?

If there was a family issue or something bigger than the guy shouldnt have been at Drew League hooping it up

He was invited to play against Cousins and DeAndre Jordan and many other great players in practice and get coached by Coach K, why the fcuk wouldnt he go?

I dont have anything against the guy but Drummond is the face of our team by default. He isnt the heart and soul of our team. Maybe that's Reggie or Mook or eventually one day Stanley but as of right now that isnt Andre. He isnt interested in improving his game in the offseason and playing with and against the best while learning from one of the best coaches in basketball. Even if he didnt really focus and try hard he still would improve just by practicing with those players and playing in international games.

The easy Gold is the cherry on top, what could possibly make him skip out on that? There arent many Gold medal winners in NBA history, why pass up a chance at going?

SVG even once said if he went to the Olympics that Gores would send his own personal coach to make sure Drummond gets his own drills and important work outs completed in addition to practicing with Team USA.

Im not the only one confused several others have commented on the GB and other sites as to why he would turn that down only to get dominated in the Drew League lol

He had every right to turn down the Olympics for any reason he chose, even "I just didn't feel like it" or "I skipped the Olympics just to piss off that one guy on the Pistons board on RealGM who thinks I should do everything HE wants me to do."

LeBron didn't play. Does that mean his leadership sucks?

Did you just compare LeBron not going to the Olympics to Drummond not going to the Olympics?

LeBron just finished his sixth straight trip to the Finals by winning a Championship. I think he deserved his rest

Whatever like I said Drummond can do what he wants but lets not pretend like he is actively trying to get better as a player and leader (that's what would have been accomplished if he went to Rio), but instead he wanted to stay home and take it easy, which hey ive been there i dont blame him for that

On the other hand, with all the hotties in Brazil and all those all-star NBA players im sure there was tons of fun to be had in Rio as well.

Hmmm let's see, off the top of my head:

1. Zika
2. Corrupt government
3. Being robbed at gun point
4. Unsafe living conditions
5. Contaminated water
6. Not wanting to get injured (just because you get paid doesn't mean you want to risk injury in the offseason)
7. Wanting to rest for the NBA season
8. Work on other specific skills (*cough free throws cough*) instead of hanging out in Rio
9. Doesn't feel like it?

Any number of other reasons. Plenty of NBA players and other athletes chose not to compete in these Olympics.

Andre Drummond has millions of dollars. The items you listed 1-5 are of no concern to him

The suites on the cruise ship Team USA is staying on range from $10-16K a week. Living in luxury while eating all the best food. There was even a bulletproof wall built in front of the cruise ship which is docked next to the ship where all the Olympics officials are staying aka this is THE safest spot in Brazil to be.

Hahahaha now I know you're not serious. Millionaires don't care about being robbed at gun point or their physical health and safety? GTFOH

Do you actually think these guys would ever got robbed or be in a position to consume food/water that isnt safe to eat/drink?

There are many dangerous places around the world and tons of billionaires travel there every year without worrying about any of the concerns mentioned above simply bc their wealth affords them the luxury NOT to worry

But yeh Drummond didnt go bc he was scared of getting robbed at gunpoint or gettin Zika.

Yup. Pau Gasol, as smart a player as you'll find off the court, actually said he was giving serious thought to not going because of the virus, for example. Ryan Lochte (US swimmer) was robbed at gunpoint recently.

Given that they have everything they need on the cruise ship and how fun of an opportunity it seems like, in his place I'd go. But these are very legitimate reasons as to why an athlete wouldn't want to go.

People are saying Lochte stories is bs. Some called it BS at the time too. He got robbed at gun point, but dude didn't take his shoes or his watch.

its a really weird situation. Per reports, the stories of the individuals present do not align and per review of the video footage on the team returning to the village, neither showed a mental or physical mannerisms that is typical with someone who was just robbed at gun point. I believe at one point RL is even seen laughing w the team.

I would take this with a grain of salt as Brazil is a sh* storm and little credibility.

No, I didn't compare Drummond to Lebron. I asked a simple question--if skipping the Olympics means Drummond has poor leadership skills, would that also mean Lebron has poor leadership skills since he also skipped the Olympics? Point being, whether or not any player plays in the Olympics doesn't in and of itself determine whether or not they're a good leader. No one claimed that Dre skipping the Olympics was an explicit action aimed at working on his leadership skill so no one is pretending anything. I only addressed your assertion that skipping the Olympics meant Dre wouldn't be working on his leadership anytime soon. He skipped the Olympics; big effin' deal.

Personally I'm glad Drummond didn't go. Getting benched by coach k wouldn't have done him any good.

Drummond would have gone in the place of DeAndre Jordan

Team USA doesnt win Gold without Jordan

Drummond takes his place and would have had a huge impact

Team USA was sorely lacking big men and Drummond happens to be one of the best C in the game

We got Carmelo crying about winning his 3rd gold while Drummond skips the games all together and people on here defending him for it

If Dre continues to conduct himself in the OPPOSITE manner Melo has regarding leadership, I'll be thrilled.
