Feeding Dre in the post. Stop or Keep doing it?

So Dre was woefully inefficient in the post last year. But it seems he needs a certain number of touches down there or he isn't happy. Should Stan keep Dre working on his post game and even though it hurts our overall offensive efficiency? Or should Stan talk Dre into being a garbage man on the offensive boards (he was the best in the NBA in offensive rebound rate his first few seasons with a great FG% too before he started getting touches in the post) much like Ben Wallace was, and DeAndre Jordan is.

My big fear if we do keep working on Drummond's offensive post game and he eventually does get to be a positive player down low is that he then just gets hacked when he's in any position to score down low and we still lose out because he can't make more than half his FTs.

stop. its not his game dre only need to score if hes cutting to the basket for a lob/layup or putbacks. he needs to mainly focused on defense, free throws, or rebounds.

You keep working with him, especially at passing out of double teams. The only way to grow a guy is repetition.

If teams go small, you make them pay inside. If they continuosly double, our perimeter guys have to make them pay.

Good teams make each other better. One guys improvement can help everyone. For Detroit to contend, they must get improvements from everyone.

If Dre is happy on the offensive end, his willingness to play well on defense goes up.

Horrid efficiency compared to everyone else with anywhere near as many attempts as Drummond.
I would give him a few chances in the 1st half, if he's missing then stop feeding him for the rest of the game.
I'm not sure that's good for his confidence though.

You stop feeding Drummond if all he's doing is that quick and awful hook from a ways out like last season. Either make him work to get better position or get him to expand his post game. It's that easy.

I'm not adverse to the team wanting Andre in the post, but as is it's a completely unviable option for anything other than getting a shot up while "posting up" (quotes because that's not what he's doing) just for the sake of getting up a shot from the post.

If Drummond works to get good position down low, sure... throw him the ball. I wouldn't reward him with touches if he is 10-15 feet away from the basket so he can throw up his patented fade-away jump shoot. He is terrible outside of 5 feet.

Examples: if he were to grab an offensive rebound and pass it out to reset the offense(without turning it over) - - - If he were to Block a shot and then gather the Rebound - - - if he hustled for the entirety of a qtr, I'd give him a feed. I would not dare give him post ups otherwise.

Andre's role on offense should be to roll hard to the basket and rebound. If he ends up with an obvious mismatch on a switch it's one thing (though we need to run him with better shooters on the P&R to get those switches) but the days of a guy posting up while one guy tries to feed him and 3 other guys stand around are gone.

Now that we finally have some shooters maybe things will start to open up for him down there and we can get him some easy looks instead of just those hook shots.

Definitely stop as we only have like 3 years left with this guy and he's went from highly impactful elite garbage man to terribly inefficient liability. Play to your strengths again and make teams wish they would have traded for him when they had the chance.

Reduce his touches and post up attempts since that disrupts the spacing, only give him ball for post ups if he is deep in the post. He actually improved in that area its just he''s a black hole and often doesn't get position and instead gets in peoples way 15 foot from the hoop.

Agree I just have a problem when I see him leading the league in hook shots with terrible efficiency.

Drummond was more efficient from the free throw line than he was in the post. I'm not even exaggerating, that's an actual fact, and the stats out there somewhere, I'm just too lazy to dig it up

That being said, we were absolutely at our most efficient/effective as a team when Drummond played the glorified garbage man role, which is not at all as bad as it sounds. Just by rolling to the basket, Andre can collapse an entire defense. This is beneficial for EVERY player on our team. When he isolates himself and puts up a low-percentage shot from the post, he negates his strengths and plays right into the other team's gameplan.

If he is inefficient in practice at posting up he will be inefficient in games as well. There should be a rule for Dre; at least one foot solidly in the paint for touches. Otherwise he is just a safety valve on offense. If he pouts he can work to be more efficient or the coach should reduce his minutes. Dre has one elite skill: Rebounding. At this time if his role is anything other than Deandre Jordan he becomes a net minus .

Please stop. Might as well just throw the ball to the other team. He is a garbage man, thats it. This team needs to stop acting as if he is anything else.

Have him face up instead of shooting that predictable hookshot. He's quicker and more agile than virtually everyone at his position. They'll have to foul him, and though hes FT shooting his abysmal, their team's starting center will be in foul trouble before you know it.
