The key to avoiding the "smash n grab" is to make sure you don't leave valuables in visible sight. Doing so is asking for trouble no matter where you park in any city.

Not much you can do when they decide to just do it to a bunch of cars in a row, though. There was nothing of real value exposed in my case (they took a bottle of aspirin -- had a headache). At the time, we speculated that one car did have something of value, then they just went from car to car when they saw how easy it was.
